I prefer the darker, more morose shades.

Likewise. I did have Monaco Red for a while, but it didn't get me like Diamine Merlot does*. (And the least said about the Pelikan red I tried the better.)

*Using it today, though as I look at the page perhaps I could do with something a bit, well, "redder"….

Diamine Wild Strawberry

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

For Noodler's I STRONGLY recommend Rattler Red. Not because the color is that spectacular. In fact, the first time, I used it, I was bored. It's just a "boring" and "well behaved" ink. BUT it has hidden magic.

Here was my beloved M200

That staining was AFTER being sonically cleaned.

Then, after using 1 fill of Rattler Red

I coveted, briefly, a bottle of Noodler's Nikita. But I would only use red for markup, which is to say, very little, so a $20, 4.5oz bottle of red is hard for me to justify. And markup doesn't require red. Turquoise and the middling-to-bright greens will do also. I've even managed to use Visconti Sepia.

edit: I don't think I'd much like most of the "classic" brand reds. They tend to be too bright, too undersaturated, and either too orange or too pink. Diamine probably has a red or two I'd like, as should Noodler's.

Interesting comment about Sheaffer Skrip red, because I find it to be a nice clean red. To me, it isn't orange or blue.

My 2nd red is Diamine Red Dragon, for a darker red.

I think Noodler's will work well.

My blue works well, so yeah.

Diamine Monaco Red is my go to red ink, it has the right combination of depth and brightness to work in a fine nib for editing and correcting and can stand on its own an give decent shading with broader nibs.
