Hey fellow inkers!

 

I'm currently studying a B Medical Science in Sydney! Ill be that doctor you've been awaiting for who has legible handwriting yea? Just kidding haha. I've been interested in calligraphy since I was in high school, always wanted to improve my penmanship. Finally bought a pen early this year, was a pilot parallel though so it didn't really help on the handwriting part although it did kill some time during my holidays haha. I've been practicing blackletter recently, really love the letterforms but I'm going to try work on my handwriting now.

 

I'm ready to buy a nice fountain pen! What would you recommend? Hard medium flex nibs etc, any nice pens I can start off using? What pen models are of a decent price? I got excited and purchased two iroshizuku inks (murasaki shikibu and shin ryoku) online, no regrets there haha. Can't wait for them to arrive!!

Welcome !

 

As I read from this site, it seems that fountain pen selection down under is much more limited than elsewhere. A vintage Parker 45

seems universally available, even if you have to buy it from India by Ebay. It is durable, reliable, of conservative style, and priced

modestly. In the 1970's, I was struck by how many medical professionals and medical students, from India, were equipped with my

choice -- the Parker 45 fountain pen. Seems their parents, in India, found it to be a good choice. I used a Parker 45 through college,

and, forty years later, still carry one in my pocket.

Welcome sxs! When you say you're ready to buy a nice fountain pen what budget do you have in mind? I think its always important to begin with that and narrow your choice down.....(or you may be thinking the sky's the limit haha). My first pens when I started writing at school were Parkers and Sheaffers and I still enjoy using them today (particularly my Sheaffer Targa with the gold inlaid nib).

I agree with Sasha, The Parker 45 is a very nice pen, and if you have a flighter (brushed metal) it is easier to clean for hospital use.

 

Ofcourse there are the cheap Chinese pens from ebay that often write decently, I hear. I have only 2, a Hero and a Jinhao. And there is the Lamy Safari, probably the "most used as a starter" pen around.

But browse the subforums here, especially first stop, and look for topics like need advice on beginners pen, sub 50$ pen advice and similar.

Thanks Tritonus! In the meantime around $0-80, but in a month or two up to $200 is fine! I'm using a sheaffer now haha, but it's an italic nib :P
