Platinum Or Gold?

Looking at my collection of 14 Mont Blanc pens (about 1/4 were gifts), I realized, I haven't bought a Gold MB in about 15 years, with the exception of the MB Leonardo Sketch Pen (cil) ... and had I known a year and a half later there were to be a platinum version, I would've held out.

 

Whats your preference? I'm such a silver-platinum person, Gold just doesn't do it for me anymore.

I agree - me thinks Silver/Platinum is more understated class. Gold is a little flashy except on a vintage Sheaffer or a Big red. To each his or her own I guess.......

Well I am on my second 149 in 18ct gold and find the two tone herring bone design amazing ! I have also noted that the solid platinum models (dont own any but took a 146 on approval for a day) are magnetic for finger prints etc and how clean your hands are has no bearing at all on this.

 

The stainless steel versions do attract prints but not on the same scale as the platinum. Any metal experts got a view on this or am I just a crank ?

Prefer the vintage ones, they have both gold and silver rings.

I think on a classic pens like the Meisterstuck (standard editions 14x) that the gold trim fits them more.

 

On the newer models such as the Starwalkers I prefer the silver coloured trims.

 

On the limited edition pens I don't have a preference and there is probably a 50-50 split between the colour or trim.

 

I couldn't care less about antique pens (usually incorrectly called vintage) as I don't like them. If I were to offer an opinion though I think my first sentence could cover both modern and old pens.

I have long admired that gold 149. I really like the two-toned herringbone pattern. What a stunning pen.

With everything else in my life, I prefer silver. With MB pens, I prefer gold.

I prefer rose gold quite honestly. Yellow gold for some reason started feeling nouveau over the last ten years or so, starting with watches.

 

Otherwise, platinum for sure.

 

My only exceptions are my 149s I will always love them.

I like both.

The 149 just looks right with gold trim and the older ones with the silver rings look more interesting.

I bought a new 146 and Le Grande rollerball, went for the platinum on those.

I definitely love Platinum! My favorite pen in terms of looks that I have is the UNICEF as it is in Platinum and has a little extra at the top below the star. I'm really wanting my 149 to be in Platinum trim too but I also like rose gold over yellow gold. Trying to get a 90th 149 online has been so hard for months!

Good Question.... Lately it's hard to tell.. But one thing MB does do, is balance the both with options of both. A lot of the Writers seem to be in Platinum.

If you mean in terms of cost, Platinum is much more expensive than gold and the same pen in Platinum trim will be more expensive than the yellow or rose gold trim version.

Gold
