I would say yes, it's hard to have a favorite pen you have never held in your hand.

Fair enough. But then again you can still love/admire a pen from afar and consider it the best pen ever designed and produced.

Oh well, I covered both cases, so it's up to FP189! (his topic, his rules B) )

A toss up between a Lamy Safari, Parker 51, or Pelikan M800 (which seems to be real popular in this thread especially). Actually, after looking at my choices, I've got the greatest bottom/ mid/ high tier pens of all time. :D

It's hard to answer this question when my pen experience is so limited. Right now I am quite attached to my Lamy Vista with 1.1 nib, my S.T. Dupont Olympio Vertigo, and my green Esterbrook LJ.

Do we need to actually own the pen?

If not, I would be torn between the Pilot MYU/Murex and the VP/Decimo.

The engineering behind them is something else.

Best pens in my actual collection so far are the Dupont Fidelio, Faber Castell eMotion and Pilot Prera.

Do you need to actually own the pen?

Heck No! No problema.

Enjoy.

Don't get me wrong, I love my 51 and its little brother 21, I love Grandpa's Conklin Symetrik, I love the Sheaffer Triumph, but for a pen that's as resilient as a vintage VW Beetle, you just can't beat an Estie. I can stuff one in my pocket and head off to the coffeehouse without spending every moment in fear of damaging or losing it--in the absolute worst case, I can more easily replace a lost Esterbrook than I can the Parkers or Conklin. And I've never met an Estie that didn't write perfectly as soon as it was inked.

The fountain pen, but I have also like some gel pens, rollerballs and some fine point permanent markers.

Parker 51 Aerometric.

Although my Pelikan 400 brown tortoise is coming in as a really close second (maybe I should rename it "Avis" because it's #1-1/2...).

For me the 1990s Pelikan 400 brown tortoise is #1 and it is a Parker 61 with an accountant's nib that is # 1 1/2.

Pilot custom heritage 92. After getting one, the Pelikan m200 feels like a pen from a different league altogether. Smooth piston that doesn't trap ink, very smooth nib even for a Japanese fine (no more Pelikan random nib size stamping), and a section that flares out slightly rather than having a protruding nib. Wished I can afford one in every colour!
