Your Frequently Used Inks Recently? Why You Selected?

Buzzie

Recommended Posts

Aloha - What ink(s) have you been using recently, say, past few weeks or month? Not necessarily all-time favorites, but just whatever you have fired up recently and pen you selected.

Maybe add why you selected it, and its attributes. Work? journal? letters? experimenting with new ink? testing repairs? testing nib?

May be interesting to see a snapshot of what the members have been up to very recently - current events, folks?

For starters, here's my most recent:

(1) Aurora Blue, using in a recent home-rehab Parker 61 Flighter capillary, picked Aurora for easy cleanup.

(2) Noodlers Black Swan in Australian Roses, using in a recently home-restored burgundy flexy Venus President, picked ink for matching color and shading, and

(3) Noodlers Black Eel, selected for bulletproof qualities and formal color, in a newly acquired black 1948 Parker "51" vac with a gorgeous sterling cap

(4) Edelstein Topaz, loaded into a huge Sterling Yafa with 14K Bock nib, equally large, trying to select an ink that will match up to the big wet elegant Bock nib. .

Aloha -

Do not agonize about tomorrow. Today has enough troubles of its own. ..Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof...

3) Noodler's Eel Blue- looks great, formal enough to use on tests, assignments, etc...

Rohrer und Klingner Salix - while I always love experimenting with some bright colors I always find myself returning to this classic. Good on everything from newspaper to rhodia. Decent shading. Fairly permanent. Just overall reliable and I just love the deep lapis hue it has before it oxidizes. :D

Hmm, Kon-Peki and R&K Salix for me too, I also have two pens inked with iroshizuku kosumosu (it looks better in a bolder nib I've decided) and I'm working my way through a J. Herbin sample pack I got from Goulets.

The praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards.

I've been really excited about Diamine Chocolate Brown, Diamine Saddle Brown, and Diamine Marine lately. The latter two shade quite nicely, even in medium nibs. Chocolate Brown is rich and tasty :)

I also just loaded a Nib Creaper with my sample Noodler's Cactus Fruit Eel the other day, and I am LOVING what a rich colour that is! May just have to get a whole bottle, now.

My top nowadays would have to be, in no particular order:

Iroshizuku Asa-gao for my daily writer, a Lamy 2000 in medium. The ink is a nice vibrant blue, but still fits well in formal settings. Quite a bit of red sheen on good paper, too, which makes it fun for correspondence.

J. Herbin Rouge Hematite for my TWSBI 580 with a 1.5mm nib. I've been practising my italic calligraphy lately, and the green-gold sheen of the ink looks great when paired with Blackletter styles.

Sheaffer Skrip Blue-Black in my vintage Waterman's 52 with a semi/med flex nib. The ink is relatively cheap, and I don't want to use something pricey for a firehose of a pen like this. Also, it's just wet enough to keep from skipping, but not so wet that the hairlines get compromised in springback.

I'm really fond of J. Herbin Vert Empire since it has a nice colour. I like Sailor Jentle Sou-ten for the same reason. I usually alternate between these two inks for my 1911L with a MFNaginata Emperor nib, but since the pen's been away for repairs, I haven't actually been using these inks lately. May change out Iro for Sou-ten later on.

None of these are constants, not in the strictest sense of the word (R. Hematite is pricey, so I sometimes sub with Skrip Red for the TWSBI), but I tend to gravitate towards them.

Cheers!

Kevin

Monteverde Brown: I wanted an old-fashioned brown, without red tones, to use in a vintage plain black Conway Stewart 286. My first Monteverde ink, and the shading is really wonderful. Good value too.

Noodler's Army Green: in a favourite Parker 45 with italic nib. To write a letter to a friend who loves olive green inks. Looks lovely on cream paper.

Writing Lab (by Sailor) Vintage Denim: in a 1970s Pilot Elite "Big Cap". I like matching Japanese inks with Japanese pens.

OK. Here it is. Today I have four pens.

1. Lie de The in TWSBI 580 1.1 stub - nice, wet line. I like the color and I use it at work.

2. Gold - KWZI in Waterman Carene M nib - testing this new ink, using at wok as well. Amazing stuff.

3. Yama-Budo in Aurora Kona - love the color, use at work as well

4. Wanadium Purple - Organics Studio in Pilot 78G, B nib - testing. But I don't like this ink.

Just thought I'd chime in and post the current inks I am using.

1. Iroshizuku Yama-Budo - stunning colour

2. Diamine Ox-Blood - Lovely deep burgundy, I like to think its a professional colour to use for work.

3. Diamine Hope Pink - Unsure, it's a touch gaudy.

4. Diamine Ancient Copper - I had purchased this based on a beautiful writing sample from the folks on FPN, great for shading!

I'm using Quink Black in my IM. Not my favourite black, but I have an almost full bottle and it's sort of permanent.

Since I also have blue and blue black and I like neither, I made a 1:1 mixture of Quink blue and blue-black for my other pens several days ago. It's a cool teal blue and I'm settling on it for a while.

Mostly due to me being a lefty and needing ink to dry quickly on work forms, I've been using:

  • Noodler's Bernanke Black
  • Noodler's Bernanke Blue

LOL, huge variety, right?

1) Noodler's Ottoman Azure - always have it in at least one pen;

2) Sailor Kobe #19 (Minatogawa Lime) - for it's very attractive shading;

3) Noodler's Lexington Grey - doing some sketching and watercolours with my daughter;

4) Organics Studio Blue Merle - trying it for the first time; I like it a lot.

Parker Penman Sapphire - a bottle found in a small store in a small town in Sicily. Almost empty. Maybe the ilimate ink since I love the true blue, blue, blue color and its amazing behavior. And it's just blue.

Pilot Asa Gao. Giving a try to these inks, loving them, not the price...

Diamine Monaco Red. My regular red for years, always doing the job.

Noodler's Apache Sunset. Beautiful orange.

No blacks lately, mainly writing with blues. Well, Parker blue. Amazing. Stop stopping making it.

Edit to add: forgot about that one: this last month, I've done a lot of writing with Sailor LE Rikyu Cha, mainly in my Visconti Voyager. Still have more than a half bottle. Love, love this ink.

Here's what I've been using the last couple weeks.

Diamine Red Dragon - it's one of my favorite reds, and one of the only inks on the list that isn't a newish sample.

Baystate Blue - the other ink on this list that I actually own a bottle of. I ordered a Pilot Metro to be my dedicated BSB pen as I just don't care for the Safari I used previously for this job. What better reason to use an ink than just getting a dedicated pen for said ink!

Iro Take-sumi - I've never been a big fan of black inks, but gave this one a try. It's just interesting enough to keep me from flushing it out.

Iro Yama-budo - also a new sample, and I needed something brighter than the dark reds, blues, and blacks I have inked for work. (BSB's feathering generally prevents it from being used at work).

PR Blue Suede - another new sample. Just another new ink to try out. I'll be getting a bottle of this one for sure!

Diamine Choclate Brown - another new sample. I'm not a huge fan of browns, but feel obligated to find one I like, lol. This may be it simple because it's nice and I don't want to try more brown inks.

Sailor Jentle Yama-dori - took be a while to find this one, but a friend from another forum traded me a sample to hold me over till I could find a bottle in stock. I fell in love immediately and ordered a couple bottles once I found some.

So many inks, so little time...

Well, I had a fair number of pens inked up recently so I'd have plenty when I went on vacation. So those inks were:

Noodler's Kung Te Cheng, Walnut, 54th Massachusetts, and Purple Heart.

Sailor Sky High.

J Herbin Vert Empire.

Then I've tried two of the three inks I got in the Akkerman group buy at DCSS -- #10 (the IG ink) and #19 (Rood Haags Pluchte).

And I wanted something not too cloggy to use to test the Snorkel I got repaired at the show, so that ended up being Waterman Mysterious Blue. And I have no clue what's in the Parker 61 I got (also at DCSS) but it's a very nice blue black color without the greenish tinge so many blue-blacks end up being.

Montblanc Midnight Blue is my eyedropper ink--works great on just about any paper I encounter and is water resistant. So I don't mind having it in a pen for a long time.

Pilot Blue Black--Also works great on just about any paper I encounter and is water resistant.

Noodler's Black--Same reason as...Hey, I see a trend. I use inks that handle a variety of papers with permanence.

Sailor Grenade

Sailor Yama Dori (wasn't hard to find, got it on Amazon)

I was trying to match to J Herbin Rouge Opera with the Grenade (close) and I think Diamine Asa Blue with the Yama Dori (the YD is greener and more what I was trying to achieve).

I like the Sailor inks a lot, saturated and wet.
