Is it just the one ink?

EDIT: OK I'm finding a few others, but you have to hunt...

Xinyun

People often want what is not easily obtainable and disregard that which is. That may answer some of Sailor's shop exclusive inks popularity outside Asia.

I do not know it was Chinese, someone here said it was, but I was online to buy the latest line of KN inks went that sale went live. I quickly got a couple of colors in my shopping cart only to see them vanish from it as I tried to grab other colors. They were taken out of my online shopping basket and in the end I gat not a single bottle of a single color of the five offered. Still haven't been able to get any of these.

For the past three sets, I just walked into the store and walked out with them. Can't do that any more. I can't even reserve a couple of bottles for this year's Maruzen pen fair despite having membership in their pen club and a LE Maruzen pen on order.

Somebody is buying up all these inks and selling them on the secondary market in such a way that even we "locals" can't get them at the original point if sale at the original price.

But again, not necessarily Chinese. I guess I should say that hope that there aren't bus loads of ink tourists in line at Maruzen from the evening before waiting to bum rush the place and grab all this year's ink, as I understand was the case with the newest KN inks.

Actually, I think in those case they are Chinese, the private buyers do those things, take whatever in the online store or in the local store, and now they are so many of them.

I would say, the sailor ink is only a interest for minority of minority, even early last year. Things start to get away when they gradually switching to round bottles.

The horror that the beautiful bottle which is always available now starts to get rare in the market, this thoughts made many many ink lovers start to crazily "store" them. They take whatever color it is as long as the bottle is diamond one. And then more and more people get to know sailor ink and join this craze.

The empty diamond bottle was 2d in the beginning of last year, but reaches 20 times the price at the end of last year for popular colors. And if the bottle is still getting fewer and fewer, the price would even go higher.

And as more people notice the bottle, more people notice sailor ink. It simply gets much more popular than before, and since even the round bottle ink is hard to get these days, people start to store round bottles too.

And also this private buyers business start from that time, they take whatever in the local store and online store, rise the price and sell it. Well, no matter what color it is, they can always sell at double price. If it's popular colors, you name the price. That's the situation now in China.

I've heard that sailor is not happy with this, and many store start to have purchase limit. But when there is a need there is always a way.

I personally is really upset about the secondary market price(which is getting higher and higher everyday), and for me a reasonable buyer, I for sure can not compete with the ones who are willing to pay whatever. And I pretty understand the local ink lovers are upset they can not even get a local ink next door.

But still, I don't know what can be the solution, unless the sailor increasing it's production speed and meet the need. They may need to admit that they become a popular ink and should have a suitable production level that fit into the need.

There is a old Chinese saying. The one who manage the water should dig the channel to lead the water, not try to block them. You can not block the water, it would only cause bigger damage. I would be happy to see the sailor ink increase their production level and everyone is happily getting their ink, and the craze would fade slowly.

And again, I am not really in the position to blame anyone storing the ink, I'm the one who already got a Fujiyama blue round bottle and still desperate searching for the diamond one. =P It do look so pretty.

And so it seems. I too have hoarded a couple of inks, but those are LE inks of colors I love. I know that when they are gone, they are gone so I stocked up so that I am not likely to run out any time soon.

I am saddened that some of my other favorite inks are now hard to get. I did not stock up on them as there were plentiful and close at hand. Now they are just gone.

Agreed, the jeweled bottles were special, but if they had been filled with ordinary Sailor blue there wouldn't have been the demand. The inks are special, had special bottles, exclusive to one store even if some of the inks at different stores were very similar. So people must very much still want the ink, and it's exclusive connection to a store. I know for myself it's really the ink, but the store connection is extra.

Also Sailor may be experiencing problems scaling up Mr. Ishimaru's recipes.

For me, I agree though I know some who would prefer the jewel bottles even with regular inks. Some for style some because they have larger pens than require a deeper bottle to fill from. Interestingly, Maruzen now carries their own regular line in the bottle that once was used only for their sepia. The ink is just repackaged Sailor blue, blue-black etc, which they freely admit, but now in the Maruzen bottle. I wonder if these will be more popular.

May I ask what is Maruzen? You may write down in Japanese I think I can read, but English translation is difficult for me.

Maruzen 丸善 an old, large book, stationery and fountain pen store in Tokyo. They host a yearly pen fair and issue their own LE Sailor inks for these. They also have their own line of inks, also made by Sailor although in the past by other makers too.

Aha, I know. They have 鸠羽鼠, which is quite nice grey ink ... External blue is also popular.

Yes, hatobanezu is a very nice ink. Although I don't use it much.

Eternal blue is very light for daily usage. I like darker hues of blue like vintage denim and Seiran.

Do they interact with English speakers?

I always try and actually those basic words would be "fountain pen" "ink" "reserve" and "international shipping". But I don't think they ship oversea.

Most of the times it is safe to assume that they don't ship overseas. I only know one seller who would ship overseas and now they have stopped as well. They have opened Amazon shop instead.

Joyful-Honda does not ship overseas. Whatever little inventory that makes it online is something left after the over the counter sales. I don't want to go to Gunma to replenish my Purple Heart stock. :(

That probably is a scammer. Since she only accept directly transfer and the price is ridiculous.

It looks like some of Sailors old inks are coming back!

Limited about 1000bottles. There are eight colours so roughly 125bottles for each colour.

According to Nagasawa's Facebook page, they are taking pre orders now.

It's times like these I think Sailor is somewhat sadistic. :P Would it be that awful to have more colours in their permanent lineup like Iroshizuku? I'd love to try some all of these, but it seems impossible (and/or expensive!). :(

I was once a bottle of ink, Inky Dinky Thinky Inky, Blacky Minky Bottle of Ink!

I hate it. Yet another round of "limited version". 125 bottles per colour. There's no way I'll be able to get one.

[more rantings omitted]

It's not much fun in the ink world these days, is it. The inks I like are as rare as hens' teeth, and most other new inks seem to be full of ghastly glitter :gaah:

[grrrrrrr grumble mumble :-/ ]
