Just last week KN got a very small shipment of inks in. 40 bottles each of Pheasant and Sakuratake. Back when the shortage was just beginng to become known, KN's manager said that they were then still planning on restocking these inks, so I do not think thet they are discontinuing them.

...

True, that. It's how I got my two bottles last week.

Did you join just to rub it in? :lticaptd: Just joking. Welcome...

Couldn't resist. :D

I usually just read all the posts in the thread and enjoy the new inks whenever I can purchase them. I visit Japan once a month on business trips and hound the stores in Kyoto area and sometimes in Tokyo. Had to confess the crime for which you suffered. :)

Since you are in Japan, why not try visiting Ohashido and Hakase if time permits? Never had the opportunity to visit Hakase personally since the location is so remote.

Thanks for welcoming. :)

Man lucky you! I am trying to talk my boyfriend into go there for our honeymoon. Sadly I think the siren call of the UK makes London the choice instead.

Ohashido don't have a meet till March; traveling with very young kids so Totori is a no-no and Nakaya won't arrange visits over the Christmas period. My pen adventures will have to wait till next time (probably in the summer).

London's not bad (but I am a bit biased 😊)

When he nixed Tokyo, I enticed him with Portobello Road! :)

I'd love to hit Paris but he's never been to London. :P

The best thing about Paris is the Eurostar terminal at Gare du Nord... 😄 Edited by mongrelnomad

I've been to Itoya and Maruzen as well as KN. Only managed to pick up a single bottle of Athena Sepia (their last one). Slightly gutted.

Maruzen and KN's selection of pens was pretty disappointing as well.

KN used to have a much better selection of used pens. They were pretty much cleaned out 18 months ago just before the sales tax went up and they have not had the same selection since. I wonder though if perhaps they are not displaying all they have. I am on their mailing list and have a lot listed in their mailings thatbI don't see in the store. And they have pulled a pen out from a drawer that I was interested in after seeing it online.

Which Maruzen did you go to? The branch in a Shinjuku department store ( I can never remember the name of this one.) has far fewer than their Nihombashi store.

I think you're better off not going to Tokyo for a honeymoon. It is a great place as a tourist, but as newlyweds the "romantic" places are very expensive and much like what you would find in any other cosmopolitan city, high quality and thus high priced restaurants at the top of high rise buildings with great night views of the city. Unless you opted for Japanese food, then you talking the really big bucks.

Nihombashi

Oh, really? In my experience, limited though it be, the Nihombashi Maruzen and the Ginza Itoya stores have the largest selection of pens I have ever seen.

I apologize for the late reply.

Seems like you visit Japan frequently as well. Nice. :)

Sad that you cannot visit Nakaya. I am personally not a fan of Nakaya (even though i have one). They don't have any customization option so "handmade" is just a marketing gimmick. I'll still go for Hakase or ohashido. I can place an order for Hakase any time i like but i would still prefer to place an order in person.

I was not able to find too many ink shops in Kyoto, seems like Tokyo is the hub for Sailor inks because i raided through Shousaikan, Maruzen, Takashimaya and Kingdom Note.

In Kyoto, i was able to visit Takashimaya & Kyoto Plant dye research institute (not sailor). Since Kobe is nearby (<100km), i visited Nagasawa Kobe and Pen & Message too. On different trips since i usually have less than a day to pursue inks. :)

Tottori is a bit far for a one day trip.

The new Itoya-K was incredible (I picked up a long eyed vermillion urushi Namiki Emperor), though I don't think it's better than Ladolt Arbenz in Zurich. To my eyes, the two are probably tied (though the nib-worker-behind-glass in Itoya may tip the balance).

Not as often as I like, but yes, I am lucky enough to visit. I have nothing against Nakaya - their selection of nibs is impressive, and I have from them a glorious custom maki-e portable memorialising my late dog, that I treasure. True, if you covet top-to-tail customisation, Hakase is probably more up your street (I have no experience with Ohashido - not for lack of trying), but they are still far more special than most alternatives...

Oh, Kobe. City where my grandfather arrived in Japan, and the home of the now decayed Jewish community. Unfortunately I won't make it there this time, but I've spent quite too long in Nagasawa in years past...

Please pardon me for asking something about which was meant for some other member, what do you mean by long eyed Namiki vermillion Emperor? I have ordered a Namiki Emperor Vermillion from Tokyo Shop which i will personally pick from them instead of getting it delivered to some other part of the world when i go to Tokyo in January. So long eyed term intrigued me. Is it different from a normal namiki vermillion emperor?

As for Nakaya, I did not know that they did custom maki-e work too. I hope that pen turned out great and stays with you for lifetime as a beautiful reminder of your late dog.

Yes, I would really love to own a Hakase. But as I said earlier, I would prefer to place the order in person. My spoken Japanese is fairly decent and I think I would be able to communicate with Yamamoto-San a whole lot better in person than I ever can over emails. The top to bottom customization that you mentioned would be fully utilized if place the order in person, at least I think that way. Ohashido is really difficult to get hold of, unless you go to that specific city where he works, the name of which escapes me.

Kobe is a very nice place to visit, and since your grandfather had some history with the place, I understand you love for Japan.

I would visit Tokyo in my next trip to collect emperor, and Nagoya in February to pick up some more sailor inks from sankodo.

I have a house in Kyoto where I leave all my inks and carry only 3-4 with me for the rest 3 weeks until I get back to Kyoto because I come to Japan for a week every month.

But I stay in other countries more than I stay in Japan, so sadly it turns into more of a business trip because whenever I come back, I'm more busy than when I am not in the country.

I wish both of you goodluck. I hope you can come to Japan soon, if not for honeymoon, then as a leisure trip.

I mentioned that I have a house in Kyoto, so just too lucky. :)

OoOoOoOh! Be my friend.

I have a dear friend in Nagoya and a cousin in Tokyo. They keep insisting I visit, but the stars have yet to align. Still, I'm hoping for a family trip next year (some matters will be settled in January)--I hear the fly fishing in some parts of Japan is world-class! And, uh, of course inks and pens are secondary (that's what I tell the boys and their dad :P) .
