Montblanc We Daniel Defoe - F

Pen2009

Recommended Posts

I just got the delivery of my WE Daniel Defoe with an F nib. I liked the look of this pen from the first sighting. I like the color of the pen body and cap as it looks like a laquered wood. I am guessing each pen has different "marble" pattern.

The clip's drawing is done with laser, it seems. It looks very sharp and precise. I like it.

The cap ring and piston nob are nicely detailed. The MB star at the top of the cap does not show the typical "aged" color. It is as white as the regular 146 and 149. I prefer the aged color of my other WE pens. The pen is nicely weighed. But, the step on the pen body is a tad sharper than I expected. At least, it won't cut my fingers. So, that issue is not going to be a problem.

I will let the pictures do the review.

Some very nice photos.

Reminds me that I've not yet read the booklet that comes with the pen yet.

I was surprised when I removed the shrink wrap on mine that the pen does not come inside the book box even though there is room for it - this is a first for the series.

I see you've got six WE pens. Any plans to get any more. You need at least one more MB to fill the box :)

Nice pictures, thanks! I'm still not sure if I buy this one, though; the shape of the cap is the reason for that.. But with La Couronne having it in stock, I can see it in real life now.

Your WE's have a nice home. The other 3 drawers are filled with pens as well? Or is there spare room for housing more WE's?

Not in the picture, but, I have another 149, the silver barley and the 146. And, a Boheme roller ball... My plan is fill that top shelf of my pen case with WE as I plan to keep getting next one in the future. I know the WM Edson Black Sea looks out of place among the MB pens.

Excellent pictures, and I quite like the pen. I have seen it, in the flesh, so to speak, but wasn't tempted to part with my money.

The de Balzac also was structured in this fashion with the pen outside the book box.

Many many thanks for the quick picture review. You have shown the details very well.

Have you already written with it? Any specific comments about this WE?

Enjoy the pen. I am not sure about the wooden part. I think I need to see it in person first to decide whether it is beautiful enough for me to like it. I do like the metal trim part though, and the nib looks pretty exquisite. Is it a 146 sized nib?

Fountain pens are like weapons. They just make your pocket bleed so much.

Nice looking pen, congratulations. I wish you the joy of it.

The only thing that concerns me is that some of your pens (maybe all of them?) still have the nib size stickers on them which suggests to me that you do not write with them. I have to say that I agree with the member whose signature says something like "a pen is only a pretty stick until you ink it."

There are only two WEs I have ever thought I would like to own - the Hemingway and the Mark Twain. I am sure I will never be able fo afford them, even second hand, but you can bet your sweet bippy if I ever do I will ink them and use them.

I know some are concerned about ruining their value as collectors items or for later resale but one thing I have learned on this board is that pens are poor investment vehicles so you might as well enjoy them by using them rather than by only looking at them. I can't zpeak for anyone else but I know I can't afford to own something like that that just sits around and looks pretty. YMMV.

Brian

These are the best pictures of the Daniel Defoe I've seen; they really give you a sense of this substantial pen! IMHO it is among the most beautiful of WE, aside from the clip (I'd have to see the laser etching in person).

As Brandon stated, the packaging is very interesting as MB seems to be using a container that reminds me of the ones they ship back from service, only clear.

Thank you very much for the nice pictures. How fat is the body? Close to 149 or 146? I also would like to know the size of the nib.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax Today 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax Today 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax Today 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.

Oh well. In case of failure you can always wring the paper to have a nice -albeit somewhat stale- cup of coffee back.

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.
    • Astronymus 17 Feb 16:19
YOu might need to thicken the coffee with something. I admit I have no idea with what. But I'm pretty sure it would work.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄
