Is Tomoe River Paper Changing?

D Armstrong

Well, glad I stuck to QC and Ryman's Bank!

I bought some QC and didn't like it. Felt cheap and my inks looked sludgy on it somehow. It is a good price though.

I'm not going to panic yet. I hope D Armstrong tells us how his investigations go, he seems to be in the thick of things.

I actually placed my first order for Tomoe River paper yesterday, about 30 minutes before I saw this thread. I'll report back as soon as it comes in and I can do a writing sample.

Don't believe everything you think.

I emailed Jay at paperforfountainpens with the fpgeeks thread yesterday but got no reaction. Has anybody heard from him?

I have already ordered some TR paper from Owl Stationery on Etsy. 'Notebookish' on here I believe. I assume this is existing stock

I got my first ruled pad from Owl Stationery recently and tested it today with Baystate Blue. No feathering, no bleedthrough, so I'd say it's existing stock.

I just wrote on mine from JetPens for the first time and love it. No feathering or bleeding. Just got mine two days ago.

Wow, I got a message on Etsy from someone who placed a large order from my store who said that there were rumors of Tomoe paper changing. I didn't think much of it until I arrived to see what looks like the stationery equivalent of a doomsday thread.

It seems like we are still waiting for confirmation so I'm trying not to panic. But if it's true then I'm obviously out of business because I just sold my last 100 sheets of blank Tomoe paper yesterday, and was waiting until the end of the month to buy more with my "day job" paycheck. For anyone who hasn't received their order from me yet, yes all my stuff is from "old stock" purchased at the beginning of the summer.

Would it be possible for you to share the link to your Etsy store? I tried doing a search on the site but it brings up over 2,000 matches of owl related stationery products.

Edit: Nevermind, I found it by searching for Tomoe River instead. Your store is actually named Owl Stationers, not Stationery as I was searching on.

I just ordered 100 sheets of TR cream from Jay at PaperForFountainPens. I was checking out the Nanami Seven Seas site, and Dave had put up a notice that he'd heard the rumors, but that TR has always made a 'catalog' grade of paper, which is apparently what the wholesaler had imported. Dave said NOT TO WORRY, nothing has changed with the 'notebook' grade of TR paper.

That said, I'm glad I got my order in ;-) Still thinking about one of those Seven Seas Writer notebooks. Has anyone here used one of them? What do you think?

Thanks for the news. I just went to Nanami Paper's website and saw his note on the "rumor." In addition, he said that they always use notebook grade TR paper and that they test the paper before putting it in production. No worries, mate! Whew.

I have one of the previous model (orange cover) and I just love it. Solid construction and lays flat. My only complaint is that he doesn't make one with white TR paper, but that's just a personal preference.

We are investigating, and the wholesaler is checking with their agent.

And the agent will check with Tomoegawa, and then we'll know more.

From the answers to this thread, I understand that some paper is fit for catalogs and other paper fit for notebooks. Before reading this, I understood that the catalog paper was just perfect for writing, i.e., notebook use. So are there two kinds of this paper, or not? Perhaps what you received was just a mistake.

That being said, I am happy that I ordered 4,000 more sheets well before having used up my first 4,000 sheets. But I use this paper for everything, also for printing out things, so it won't last forever....

Thanks for the input MyriamV. I actually prefer the cream myself, but that's just my preference. I'm probably going to order one soon...

We are looking into the possibility that there may be multiple grades, possibly with different sizing:

http://www.tomoegawa.co.jp/english_2/product/p_ssm/ssm1301.html

This seems to indicate that there may be as many as three or four. My working theory is that the Toronto distributor bought "mat", when they wanted "high gloss". I'm waiting to hear back from them.

I like my working theory. It means there is still lots of good paper out there...

Yes, I think the Toronto distributor just got the wrong grade. Hopefully they can figure it out to everyone's satisfaction.

I wrote to Dave at NanamiPaper.com, and he kindly replied to me a few hours later. Nice!

He explained that the probable explanation was that the other vendor probably ordered the wrong paper, as the names are very similar in Japanese. He reassured me that the Seven Seas notebooks contain the same TR paper we're familiar with and want. Great news.

I have been in touch with the Toronto distributor, with this information. Apparently they did see two versions of TR in the sample book, and the coated one was "really shiny", and not at all like what I had supplied. So they ordered the one that matched my sample, which came through as above, with not enough sizing.

They will be in Tokyo in a couple of weeks, will get some substantial translation done then, and spend more time with sample books.

Jury's still out, but we're hopeful.
