Thanks wikeh2004. I asked on the Hobonichi Facebook Group and the lady there told me she measured hers at 152. So it is possible there is some sample variance at play here.

Or some variance in eyeballs and rulers! :-)

A depth of 175mm does seem a bit excessive though. Maybe they meant 17.5mm.

The Hobonichi Planner site gives these specs for the Cousin. Close enough! :-)

Size for A5 Cousin (Width 148mm x Height 210mm x Thickness 17mm)

Sorry, I did mean 17.5mm :)

I've ordered 148x215x17.5 from Renaissance Art. Let's see how that goes.

I was waiting for the new SSACK covers to go on sale, and they finally have, so I placed my order this morning. I really like the bright, sunny yellow of the cover.

Received my Planner & the Sashiko cover. Both are just lovely and the woven fabric of the cover is well-made. Now, I'm planning which pen to use with it, of course with an appropriate ink! Am thinking of ordering one for a friend who works with indigo-dyed fabrics.

I really want to purchase a Hobonichi planner, but have been disappointed with the small selection of covers. Compared to last year, it seems that has been a reduction in the offerings. Do they release new covers throughout the year??

Huh??? I went to the hobonichiplanner.com site and counted 44 covers that will fit the Hobonichi Planner. The covers that are listed under the Techo Original (Japanese) also fit the English Hobonichi Planner. All of the A6 size covers will fit the Hobonichi. I dunno if there are fewer covers than last year, but the selection seems to be pretty broad.

I kind of want to pick up one of these with that midnight blue leather cover. It looks awesome and I love Tomoe River paper, but I already have a Leuchtturm 1917 planner for 2015. Can anyone who has used both help me out? Is the Hobonichi better enough to warrant switching? Of course, I have thought about having one as a school planner and the other as a work planner...

Hiya Baalberithim,

I can't help you with that combo, but I brought the midnight blue leather cover and love it so much that I cannot wait until next year to use it.

So I'm using it with my current Moleskine.

Bring on 2015 I cannot wait to use Hobo Planner and enjoy the luscious Tomoe paper daily.

Cheers

Nat

Well, sod's law has come into play here. Decided to order directly from Japan, instead of paying the quite expensive cost at the sole British stockists. Turned out not to be so clever after all!

I've just been hit with import tax and 'clearance fees' totalling £27.83 for a planner and leather cover. Goods will only be delivered one day after the fees have cleared!

Anyone else had this issue or - which is probably more likely - have I just been unlucky?

Best Wishes,

David

Let's hope they

Hi David,

I got hit too, same combination. UK customs seem to be a law unto themselves in terms of what passes unmolested and what gets hit with VAT and an excessive handling charge.

If goods are sent normal speed Royal Mail charge £8 handling, if they are any kind of expedited service Parcelforce (owned by RM) charge £13.50 for doing exactly the same service. I tried to FoI the data that would prove that it was a scam for the extra £5.50 (legally they can only charge costs), but Royal Mail was privatized before my third stage appeal was completed :( I don't mind the tax, it pays for things; handing over £13.50 to a private firm after already paying for shipping P*sses me off!

Glad it's not just me, although not pleased for you.

I'm currently locking horns with Parcelforce, as they didn't deliver on the day following my payment, despite that promise in their letter to me and on the confirmation email. I paid and then rearranged my commitments to be able to be at home to receive the parcel on a particular date. In fact, I didn't get delivery until the third working day after payment, 2 complaining emails, two phone calls and no return call as promised.

I've asked for a complete detailed breakdown of what the £13.50 fee is actually for over and beyond what service I should get included in the correct original postage - be intrigued to see if I get an answer.

I don't normally get aggrieved by this sort of thing but their cavalier disregard for my time has really annoyed me. If they choose to fob me off, I'm seriously consiing a Freedom Of Information act request to establish whether any of this charge is actually a 'profit' to them.

Caved and ordered one with the midnight blue leather cover. Now I play my least favorite game, waiting for the mail-man to deliver a package. I'll probably start with both, and see whether I prefer Leuchtturm or Hobonichi better over the course of January. Worst case, I have a lovely cover for any A6 notebooks I grab.

I ordered one last week based on the great reviews here and it came yesterday. It's a really beautiful planner.... And that paper!!

I just got the plain black cover, but am so tempted by the green leather.

I got the light tan leather cover last year, and, as promised, it has darkened with use to a lovely amber color. I expect it will see out the rest of the decade, at least.

Although I purchased the black leather cover last year -- the Arts and Sciences version-- I purchased the wine colored leather cover a few weeks ago since I have both the Japanese and English versions of the Hobonichi planner for 2014 & 2015. The black leather planner cover, which has a fold-over flap snap cover, is the very highest quality of leather-- beyond handsome. The leather is commensurate in quality to the Montblanc leather line but softer. Since other colors were sold out last year (understandably) I purchased the black so when I saw the new wine color this year I had to splurge. Ridiculous! But worth it!! The wine colored cover is exquisite and has a zipper closure, credit card slots and a nice wide fountain pen loop.

This is why the expression " you get what you pay for" was invented !
