Montblanc 90Th For Sonnet Lover

I'm am seriously considering the Montblanc Meisterstuck 90th anniversary fountain pen.

I found out that I exactly have 3 choices:

1. 149
2. Classique
3. LeGrand

I do not know which one is the best for me!

If what I heard is right, the only difference between these three is the size.

Which one of the three is the closest to the Parker Sonnet in size? (The size of Parker Sonnet is perfect for me)

The sonnet is slightly larger than the LeGrand (145 I think), whilst the Classique (146) is significantly larger and about the same as a Duofold International.

In all sincerity, I would suggest that you get the 149 and call it a day.

The Classique is a cartridge converter I believe...that's the main difference other than size. I would go to a Montblanc store and try out all of the different sizes and I would also try out their different nibs. The 146 LeGrand is best width for me but the proportions are not near as nice as a 149's and when you take price into consideration the 149 is the only one I would even think about buying new.

 

The 146 LeGrand is going to be the closest to the Sonnet I believe. I personally would not buy a new one...$700 can get you a way more interesting fountain pen like a customized Nakaya or beautiful celluloid OMAS...I am not saying these pens are better but I do think they are more interesting. I can buy used 146s in nice condition for $200-$300 all day long...good luck getting a used Nakaya or celluloid OMAS for that price.

The 146 Legrande and 149 are piston fillers compared to the Classique (and indeed the Sonnet) which is a cartridge/converter filler.

 

The Classique (145) is the smallest of the 3, next is the 146 Legrande then the 149.

 

I have the Classique version of this pen and like it. I tend to go for smaller pens. I don't have a Sonnet to hand but i would say the Classique is closest. If you cannot get to a B&M store to try the sizes out then have a google for the specifications to give you an idea.

 

That said if you do not own a 146 yet, and don't mind a piston filler, this needs serious consideration as a practical workhorse type pen with all the quality MB provide. Personally, I dont take my 149 outside my home. Its too bling and too big to be practical. YMMV.

Fair point about the 149. I'm not sure it's bling in the way that a solitaire is but it's a very fat pen that I would be self conscience about bringing to meeting at work. It's sort of like wearing one of those Hermes "H" or Louis Vuitton "LV" belts...not nice to be seen with.

get the 149, you won't regret it
