Ink By The Gallon

Occasionally you see these vintage school ink bottles turn up, which contain at least a litre of ink - usually in black or blue. I was wondering if anyone collected these large-size ink bottles. And also: how much does your largest ink bottle contain?

I first saw these large bottles in the 1984 adaptation of the Dutch novel 'Ciske de Rat' in which young Ciske pours a bottle of ink all over his teacher. An enduring image.

Edit: the ink-pouring episode apparantly is right at the beginning of the movie:

I saw some of very large vintage ink bottles with some ink still in them at the Chicago Pen Show and thought, "god I wish I loved one ink enough to justify buying a liter bottle!" I believe some companies still make them as well. (Pelikan?) Alas, I think my wife might kill me if I came home with not just another bottle of ink but a liter bottle to boot! And, on top of all of that, if I told her that it was old ink that I would be hesitant to use, well...

Edit: It looks like function has won out over aesthetics in the new bottles.

Noodlers can make some large ones as well.

I want one, but I can't justify it.

I understand that they are no longer able to produce the large bottles. It was somewhere on the Goulet site. The idea of a large bottle was appealing, but I had to remind myself that I wouldn't use it up.

That's a shame, though I would understand the reasoning behind it. i think most users would think the same way as us, and simply make them hard to sell.

Aww... for a moment there before I read the post saying those large Noodler's bottles aren't available anymore, I imagined a class set of Lamy Safaris and a huge bottle of ink for my students. Imagine -- no more complaints of hand cramps during timed writings, and everyone writing in my favorite black. :)

I could never afford that, anyway, but it was a nice little daydream.

I think Pilot or another Japanese maker makes larger bottles also, but I do not remember the exact size.

I see it once in a while on eBay.

Perfect for a student, 1 bottle will take him/her all the way thru high school or undergrad. :D

Goulet mentioned, but I thought I'd post this picture that someone took at the Boston Pen show many years back:
There was another of a table of bottles but I lost that picture.

I believe Pilot sells 350ml bottles of ink. Pilot INK-350.

Hi,

I think if you ask nicely, Diamine can provide ink in large bottles too. Pelikan also sells the Brilliant Black and Royal Blue in litre sizes.

In India, Camel inks are available in 500ml sizes, I think they cost 70-80 INR, a little over 1 USD.

I'd love a liter of Iroshizuku Tsuyu Kusa...It would cost as much as Hennessy Paradis though!

That Gallon Jug of Heart of Darkness (post #9) might be a good addition to the "End of the World" Prepers out there!

Who would they send letters to, though? :)

No letters in that situation. However, there would be lots of things to journal about and keep track of supplies and such things.

Personally, I'd go for a couple quarts of Platinum Carbon Black so the archaeologists that find my remaining bones will be able to read all about how it happened and how we got were we were. But I got no place like that in my mind or my budget. But it would be nice to have "just in case."

Since HoD is bulletproof I wonder if the choice between it and Carbon Black would matter to archaeologists. If it does, I would be curious how.

This is a good question! I have been using the Carbon Black for so very long, but never thought about it. I think I'll take a look at some older journals where it was used. But the actual test of time Will be what's left 100 to 1000 years. None of us can test for that!

I have used Heart of Darkness, it is my favorite Noodler's ink! Unfortunately, in the old journals I didn't note what ink was being used. I do now. I started noting the ink I use with every entry, but have only been doing for about a year or so.
