Sheaffer Legacy Inlaid Nibs

I've just aquired a new Legacy with a broad nib. I bought it because I love the color combination (green lacque with palladium/gold cap) and the price was more than right ($180 on eBay). Trouble is, I cannot tolerate the broad nib.

 

I would like to swap in a fine for the broad and am wondering if I can use a Sheaffer inlaid nib from another model. I'd love to stay with the 18k nib but would switch to 14k if the price is right. A good solution for me would be to learn that an Imperial 14k would work so that I could pick one up on eBay.

Legacy nib units, or as Sheaffer called them writing units, are unique to that pen. The Targa and Imperial nibs are smaller than the Legacy, so can't be used. No other Sheaffer nibs will work with the cap and barrel - sizes, clutch and threads are all different. You can't remove the nib from the shell because it's imbedded in the plastic and the assemblies are glued together. All of which is to say that if you want to replace the nib, you have to replace the whole unit, not just the nib itself.

 

Current nib pricing sheets for Sheaffer pens show only an 18K nib, or an 18K palladium plated nib as available, no 14K. The retail price is $215 and $225 respectively. A sheet from about 8 years ago shows a 14K nib, but the fact that they are not on the price sheet makes me think that Sheaffer no longer has any on the shelf.

 

You may find one lurking somewhere, or a used one.....

What I would suggest is to place a WTT(want to trade) ad on fpn classifieds. Trade your broad for fine/med...etc. I'm sure someone is out there with a thinner nib that wants a thicker one.

Also, Teri at Peyton Street pens has Sheaffer inlaid nib units available from time to time. I did not see any Legacy nibs listed on her website this morning but you might benefit by reaching out to her anyway.

Hi Robert why not check on eBay as I'm sure there are lots of Legacy nibs there too. I've got the jade green and brushed gold one which has a touchdown filling system and a 18k medium nib on it too. I bought mine in Melbourne Australia back in 1996 but still in mint condition and a pleasure to write with. Mind you I use this pen more than my Montblanc 146 and the ink capacity in it is quite generous.

Stylo.ca has an excellent deal on their palladium Legacy fine nibs (they're liquidating their stock). While it's not the gold nib, the palladium nib would likely fit okay since you've got a palladium cap.

 

By the way, if that broad nib unit that you own is palladium plated rather than being yellow gold, give me a shout -- I'm in the market for one.
