What is that pen that you are constantly searching for, and when you have found it, personal circumstances keep you from buying it at the moment, but you still keep yearning for it?

Mine is the Conway Stewart Churchill in bracket brown resin. At 500 US Dollars, it definitely is the stuff of dreams, as it will remain just a dream.

I have lots of expensive pens, the most expensive cost me $2,000. My true 'holy grail' would a MB 149 in solid gold - I nearly won a brand new one at an eBay auction two years ago - I bid $5,000 and it sold for $5,600! :crybaby: There is no way I would pay $15,000 or whatever the retail price for it is now.

A celluloid Omas or Stipula Etruria with either extra fine or italic nib. Or a nice Conway Stewart in Dartmoor colour.

Above all shadows rides the Sun
And Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
Nor bid the Stars farewell.

My Holy Grail varies each time I peruse this forum.......the only factor in common is that I can't pay for it no matter what pen is.

That should be the FPN theme song in 4 part harmony! :headsmack: :roflmho:

Four-part? Try a hundred-voice choral arrangement. :crybaby:

It's never been just one pen for me. Since I have a price ceiling I will spend per pen, many times a pen I want is beyond my reach, and patience accompanied by diligent searching is required.

For a while I sought a blue auroloide Aurora Optima to replace one I had to sell back in June 2002 to pay medical expenses. I always just missed the ones for sale in my price range. Finally found one I could afford a year and a half ago.

I could never find an affordable Pelikan 100 until last December.

A marine green OS Sheaffer Balance has been near the top of the list for quite a while. Got one back in February.

A black/gold piston fill modern Aurora 88 to replace one I foolishly sold in December 2002 has been pushed down the list by various other pens over the years, but resurfaced near the top several months ago. I was able to find one in March.

I have wanted a burgundy/black streamline Parker Duofold Jr. for a while, and I have just arranged a trade for one.

So, I have been doing pretty good lately at obtaining pens that have been on the wish list for a while. I would still like to have a rosewood HR Wahl one day.

An update to this list. I still don't have a rosewood HR Wahl, but I was able to obtain via trade this week a old style Omas Paragon, which I have desired but thought was out of my price range. So, while it's still not about a single pen, I am slowly accumulating the ones I have sought.

I actually think of buying (one day...) an oversize pen, since I am more comfortable with bigger pens. So there are some pens which seemed big in pen shops, and I would like to at least try. I hope to find one of them on sale (one day...).

- Sailor King of Pen

- Pelikan M1000

- Waterman Serenite

- Faber Castell Intuition (this one I only saw photographs)

Also, there are some oversize pens that I can not consider buying, even on sale, considering their original price:

- Faber Castell Pen of the Year

- Danitrios

Pens I use very often: Lamy Accent ("EF": fine), Lamy Accent ("1.1": medium italic), Pilot Custom ("FA": extra-fine flexible).

To the Visconti Templari, I'm adding a Simpole. Just can't make up my mind which one, other than I like the red or blue rather than plain black.

I don't know any longer. My opinions have changed recently.

Right now it's whatever I feel is my favorite pen at any given time, the one I'm using and am comfortable using.

I have two nice pens, what I would consider to be "nice" or upper end, each time I use either one it becomes my favorite or "Grail".

If I could only have one of those two, I'd still be very happy having only one or either, maybe lean toward the M800 only because I can write for longer periods without hand fatigue.

Point is, I am very happy with what I have, could be happier if I had something that "fits" me better for the long-haul but I haven't found it yet.

Now if I had to choose something other than what I have, I'd go a bit longer and heavier than my M800 pen.

I'd have to try one, whatever it is, to say if it fits me any better but I believe if I ever had a chance to try an M1000 it could very well become the "The One".

Looks alone make no never-mind to me really, although it helps to be able to look at a pen and get that fuzzy feeling inside, it has to "feel" right and write right or what good is having a pen?

“I view my fountain pens & inks as an artist might view their brushes and paints.

They flow across paper as a brush to canvas, transforming my thoughts into words and my words into art.

There is nothing else like it; the art of writing and the painting of words!”

A MkIII Burgundy P61 Custom, UK make, medium nib. I have the Classic version, but I much prefer the gold cap & trimmings.

Second Grail Pen, a YOL Viceroy Barley Standard size. Will have to try one of these before I buy though.

Regards,

Richard.

I have the YoL Barley Standard with a B nib. They're lovely pens, but exactly the size of a standard pencil in diameter, so if you're not into thin pens, go for the Grand. It's worth the difference. And they're not persnickety with ink, either. I put my Noodlers into them because I know it will behave when it won't in others. I think they awe it into submission.

It's the reason I have to try it. The diameter of the grand looks too big at 14mm, I prefer 12mm, but the 10.9mm of the standard may be a bit small.

Ah - whereas the Grands are perfect for me. The other thing to look into is the length. I have small hands and I find the Standard a little short for me unposted. And with the silver and heat locally - my pool deck can head toward 40C/100F+ in the afternoons, mine doesn't really want to stay posted. YMMV in a cooler climate.

My holy grail pen is the Parker 95 Flighter just because it was introduced in my birth year and I think it looks cool. Of course, I will probably never find one but I can try looking. After all, you never know what you will find if you just look.
