Here is my attempt to restore visvamitra's pictures to the second post in this thread.

All credit for the pictures, and the extensive comparison work, is owed to visvamitra.

Enjoy!

SUMMARY

I still don't really like grey color. There are however inks I find interesting, namely: Infinite Grey, Smokey, Stone Grey and Arsenic. I like Smokey best, it's a pity they no longer produce it cause I would consider getting a bottle.

I'm impressed by Lexington Grey's behaviour and waterproofness. It's incredible.

The worst ink in comparison is Gris Nuage - it's just not made for writing, it's too watery. It looks nice on drawings but I wouldn't recommend it for writing. Anthracite is one of ugliest colors I've ever seen.

What's your opinion? You can choose few inks from the poll.

I hope that you have found this restoration useful.

DO THOUGH PLEASE NOTE:

The images in these two posts date from August 2014!

So, IF you have seen any ink on these images that appeals to you, I urge you to find a recent review of that ink - and to make sure to check for what that review can tell you about the ink's physical properties - e.g.s its rate of flow, propensity for feathering/show-through/bleed-through, ease of cleaning it out of a pen, propensity for staining pens or skin, etc.

Have fun!
M.

@Mercian thank you so very much for restoring the photos. I always enjoyed the ink reviews by Vismaritra.

I really like gray inks, so again thank you.

I'm comparably new at grey inks. There was a long time when I didn't care about grey. But recently I started to like greys with some subtle colour mixed in, such as Lamy Agate or some of the mudpack inks from Robert Oster or Sailor Ink Studio 223, and such.

This huge comparison is so helpful in getting a good overview, as all those swatches were made by one person on the same paper.

Thank you, @Mercian, for relentlessly resurrecting all those reviews!

One life!

I have some grey inks but I tend to be a little fussy about them.  Think it's interesting that the original swab and scan of Noodler's Lexington Grey looks NOTHING like what I tried (my sample of it was very pale and and was a great disappointment).

@Mercian Thanks for resurrecting the old images!

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

In honor of @visvamitra ‘s favorite gray being the discontinued Levenger Smokey, and @Mercian getting the images restored so I saw this review again, I put Levenger Smokey in a TWSBI Diamond Mini AL Silver pen with 1.1mm stub nib. Earlier this year, I bought a set of Levenger inks that had 3 discontinued inks.
