Yes it is a pen tray, or pen and pencil tray, from the days when desks would have had dip pens as standard and perhaps several available at the same time (thick, thin, red, black, etc).

I have one very similar to that shown by Chrissy, it is a pen tray which belonged to my father.

It looks like thick glass, and that is certainly the kind of thing that would be used in an autoclave. It also looks like there should be a lid. The dimpling of the base is interesting too. Is it on the inside or the outside?

 

By the way Tanzanite, two things:

 

1. I was offered a pear-shaped cut Tanzanite for $160 the last time I was in Zimbabwe in the 1990s. Kicking myself for not buying it as the price has increased ten-fold since then!

 

2. Where do you get those beautiful dip pen holders? Or should I say, where can I get one?

 

I´m sorry, but I don´t know what "dimpling of the base" means.

 

Tanzanites are really nice looking stones. $160 is a lot of money and it is not easy too look into the future to see what will happen to the price but I do understand the feeling.

 

I bought my pen holder at a local second hand shop but if you click on the link in Thuja´s post you will find the exact same pen holder.
