Platinum 3776 Century Bourgogne

Body:

To me the body feels really nice, there are no manufacturing marks of any kind. People said that the plastic feels cheap, I don't think so at all. For a plastic, it has pretty good weight to it and feels really nice in my hand. The color of this pen is very beautiful. I haven't seen any other pen with such a dark translucent red. It was one of the big factors in me choosing this pen and I wasn't disappointed.

Cap:

The cap on this pen is really cool. The "slip 'n seal" cap allows the ink to not dry out for a really long time. I haven't had any problems with drying. When screwing on the cap, there is a point where it becomes harder to turn, this is when the inner cap is touching the nib section and creating the seal. Simple but works well.

Nib:

This pen comes with a big #6 nib made of 14k gold. The nib looks amazing! It has a unique design to it. Usually nibs are curved more, this one is very flat and leads to a sleek look. Not only does the nib look great but it also writes very very well. The tines were perfectly aligned right out of the box and it started writing perfectly right out of the box, without flushing it. The pen has great flow, a little on the wet side, especially for such a fine nib. I have not had any start up or skipping issues at all. It writes perfectly when I need it to.

Conclusion:

I bought this pen on Ebay directly from Japan and it came out to be just under $100 dollars. For me, it was completely worth the price, the pen looks great and writes equally as well.

Sorry for the crummy pictures, I tried :P

A nice, concise little review but I'll just point out that "harder to turn" is not "difficult to turn". The increase in resistance as you hit the spring loaded inner cap isn't drastic. If you slow down and feel for it you can notice it. If you didn't know it was there you might never notice it.

It's definitely not difficult to turn but I don't agree that you wouldn't notice it. I forgot about the slip n seal when I opened the pen and I noticed it immediately. Either way it's not a big deal.

I received my second 3776 last week. It's a great pen, and I love the Bourgogne finish :happyberet:

The 3776 nibs are friction fit and simply pull out to allow thorough cleaning between ink changes. This is great for testing inks.

Thanks for the review. Now I need some Diamine Grey ink

Considering the price this pen sells for through Japanese sellers, I would tell anyone who is on the fence about buying one to simply go ahead and order one (or two). It's a pen that easily feels like it's worth double its price. I love the classy look of the black version but I've been really tempted to grab a bourgogne or chartres blue version to go along with it.

I just bought one.

I'm losing it because the Japanese vendor I got it from is doing me the service of holding my pens until I get back from vacation. I cannot wait. I have wanted one of these since they came out. Red is my favorite color.

Great review of a great pen. I've got the M nib on mine and R&K Verdigris in it at the moment. Certainly doesn't feel or look 'cheap' to me.

Personally, I would call it the 'thinking' man's Nakaya...

I'm inching foreward on getting one of these and this review defiantly helped in my decision! But I am wondering? Where is the link for the E-Bay pen?

As much as I lusted after Nakayas when I saw them in Tokyo in the flesh I knew they weren't the pen for me. I tend to throw my pens in my bag and they go everywhere with me and I don't like pens I can't post. I felt the Nakaya would be something I would be afraid to use outside the house. Maybe one day my life will change and I can spring for a Nakaya, but I think these 3776s are beautiful and work for me (well, theoretically as my pen is still on hold in Japan!)

Before I take the plunge myself can anyone confirm (or otherwise) - the nibs, they are the usual Japanese Medium/Western Fine (for example) comparison, are they?

Many thanks,

Yes, they run about one size smaller than equivalent Western nibs. For example, I have a fine on mine, and it's more of a Western EF. I just got a Medium, and it's more of a Western Fine. HP

That's right. My Medium is like a Fine but the Soft Fine is thinner than any of the Western/European Extra Fine nibs I have. Actually I'd thought that I wasn't going to get on with the SF at all but it turned out to be a great nib: the little bit of 'spring' in it makes it a great writer, with a little nit of character. Suits a wet ink and at the moment I'm using Cult Pens/Diamine Deep Dark Purple. Nice.

I've got mine filled with Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue.

When I was doodling I realised that 3776 and 4001 equal 7777.

This depends on what do you mean by usual Japanese and Western nibs. For instance, I have with me at the moment Waterman Kultur with the fine nib, Sheaffer No Nonsense with the medium nib and Platinum 3776 Balance with the medium nib. The order I have them listed is how their lines compare: Kultur is the narrowest, Platinum is the widest (a tiny bit wider than Sheaffer's medium). Faber Castell Basic with the medium nib would be way wider, Kaweco's medium would be about the same or narrower than Platinum's medium.

It's always better to compare not "generic" sizes (because there are none) but specific pens. And then there's Goulet's NIb Nook for that.
