Legible Yellow

Master Poobah

Recommended Posts

Ladies and gentlemen I am on a wild hunt for an ink of mythical proportions... a legible yellow. No I'm not talking about a highlighter and I won't settle for an orange.

Allow me to explain myself,

I have always been in love with the color yellow, yellow sneakers, yellow clothes, phone case, and everthing else. With this being my favorite color I naturally want to be able to write with it.

Specifically I'm talking about a bold intense yellow, like one you'd see on a flashy sports car. I'm okay with inks that shade to orange (it'll probably have to in order to be an everyday writing color that you can read) I have Noodler's Apache Sunset which I've mixed with Noodler's Yellow but I'm more interest in a standalone ink.

Please understand that I know there probably isn't an ink out there for me, but I'd like to be surprised. Thank you all.

Does Platinum make a yellow pigment ink? Being more opaque than dye ink it may stand out on the page better.

Diamine Sunshine Yellow and Platinum Mix-Free Sunny Yellow both show up fairly well. Monteverde Yellow (I believe it's cartridge only) is also just about readable.

You can spot a writer a mile off, they're the ones meandering in the wrong direction muttering to themselves and almost walking into every second lamppost.

I recently ordered the Ink Sample - Yellow package from gouletpens link containing Diamine Yellow (wish it also had sunshine yellow too) and the Platinum. Should be arriving in a couple of days and I can't wait to try them out.

I respect your search for a yellow ink, and that Diamine looks nice... But I would seriously worry about straining my eyesight when trying to actually write with it. Even Edelstein Mandarin is a borderline case, particularly in a darker environment... Or maybe it's just me!

These all look great! I'll have to try them out to see how they perform in person. Thanks everyone, you're all a big help.

If lucky, you might find Sheaffer's King's Gold. It's really just a deep yellow. It's long out of production, and hard to find, but worth the search.

I was on this quest some time ago and De Atramentis Apricot was the closest to what I was looking for. Check post 19 here:

This ink has peaked my interest but it is proving to be hard to find. The only places selling them seem to be amazon and ebay, which leaves me to believe that it might be out of production.

There seem to be very few DA retailers in the US. I got my bottle from the Goulets but then they cut back on the number of DA inks they stock and Apricot didn't make the cut. Too bad because I don't think anyone else makes anything quite like it. I turned a person in our local pen meetup group onto it and she got a bottle from an Amazon Marketplace (I think) retailer with no problem.

Maybe Pelikan Edelstein Amber? It's a little more gold than yellow but perhaps it could be an alternative. I love mine.

I do as well. While not something I use for extensive, general writing (it's more of an accent color for me), it's legible and quite lovely. Dark enough to be functional but not excessively gold.

I have not had any ebay or Amazon marketplace issues yet, but if you are not in a particular rush for it to arrive and are hesitant on the other sources you could contact the Goulet Pen Company about special ordering it with their next shipment. I believe such things have been mentioned on Brian's videos, do not remember if it was pens or ink but wouldn't hurt to ask.

I have sampled the following when trying to find a yellow that I could write a letter with (and still have the samples if there is something in particular you want to see I may be able to provide it):

  1. J. Herbin Bouton D'or
  2. De Atramentis Gold Yellow
  3. Diamine Yellow
  4. Noodler's Yellow
  5. Private Reserve Buttercup
  6. Platinum Mix-Free Sunny Yellow
  7. Roher & Klinger Helianthus
  8. Diamine Amber
  9. De Atramentis Mahatma Ghandi
  10. Stipula Sapphron
  11. De Atramentis Gold
  12. De Atramentis Scottish Whiskey
  13. Organics Studio Foggy Bottom

Nib size will matter, the broader the nib, likely the lighter yellow you will be able to use and maintain legibility.

1-5 are the only ones that I would consider true yellow. 1 and two are definitely out Of them the Private Reserve is the strongest on the page and may be useable, though with most pen and paper combinations is probably is still not an ink to use on its own. I would not bother with Noodler's Yellow as it would be too hard to read.

Diamine Amber and Stipula Sapphron both tend too orange to be considered just yellow in my opinion.

11-13 you hit more of the "gold" category. They are all very legible on their own. My experience with Foggy Bottom does not match some of the reviews on here what indicate it not being very yellow; mine is clearly a yellow sepia (brown); I was even surprised to find that it dilutes to a nice readable yellow, but it is not the popping yellow you are asking for.

This really leaves Platinum Mix-Free Sunny Yellow, Roher & Klinger Helianthus, and De Atramentis Mahatma Gandhi as colors that could be used on their own that are not too orange and not gold. Even with them I would say they are not inks that will work with all pens on all papers, but depending on your preferences and tolerances they may at least stand a chance.

What I did when I wanted to write someone in Yellow was to mix Noodler's Yellow with Noodler's Black. The mixture is a little finicky though it is as safe as the black is. I think the yellow and black may have slightly different weights that cause them separate slightly so sometimes it could come out more black. It shades well from yellow to a darker yellow-black, is readable, and would not be confused with orange. As an added benefit, if you get it wet you will at least be left with your writing in gray. You results would depend on that what proportions you mix, but you need relatively little black to make it readable. i know you do not want to mix, I am just sharing my experience.

I have excluded the highlighter inks because they would only be readable enough under a blacklight.
