Hello!

Having watched sbrebrown's video "Why aren't you doing reviews?" I decided that I would try my hand at doing YouTube reviews of fountain pens!

Here is my review of the Waterman Carène Black Sea Fountain Pen GT Medium Nib - if anyone has any suggestions/tips/tricks to help me improve my videos it would be really appreciated.

A review of the Waterman Carène Black Sea Fountain Pen GT Medium Nib

All the best,

That was a really good first review! One little point, do show your face, if you are ok with that as it makes the reviews more personal.

That is the first time I have heard the nib described as reasonable flexy......

And be aware that if you hold this section too low, with your fingers at the horns of the nib, you may be in for some coloured fingers, as this pen is known to have some nibcreep along those horns.

Try to get a bit more light on your workspace. Makes it easier for the camera to focus as well.

All in all, nice review.

I too agree that you will be giving the wrong imperssion calling it flexy. Carene nibs will flex but the user has to press way too hard for it to be an everyday flexible nib. They are thick gold sheet and as such offer little movement. It is better to have a Stub nib for line variation.

Thanks very nice review.

I now own a carene de luxe with silver biased cap AGAIN.

My first one was stolen a few yars ago B......ds!

Now only the Gold capped with stripes is being produced. I do not like the gold and the gunmetal so much. I am so happy that I found a one with the silver cap....

It is lovely and writes a dream. The M nib is ultra smooooooooth and very broad....

Dream Pen... Congrats with yours....

Hope you will have lots of joy of it

Nice video. About the flex: you must be used to writing with Esterbrook flexible nibs if you can flex that Waterman.

The Careen might not be the absolute smoothest of pens, but it is very, very smooth, and you can really feel the difference between the Carene and other pens.

I think you put the wrong accent on the first "e" in Carene. Accent grave is the ticket.

You didn't show posting the cap. I was wondering whether you would use a balpeen hammer or a claw hammer to make it stay posted. Ah, well, you can't have everything.

P.S. You should try posting the cap on a Carene rollerball.

I don't own a Carene Rollerball (shudder, I dislike RBs) but I do have 3 FPs. The one beside me now does post securely without undue actions, just tried it. It may damage the barrel in the long run. But I do not like the weight/balance disposition caused by posting so I seldom post a pen (even my Kaweco Sport gets used unposted sometimes) so it never is a problem for me.

Pajaro, are you saying the RB is different. I have an RB on my desk as a daily user and although I never post it, it posts without problem. Why should it not.

Wow, thank you all for taking the time to watch that!

In terms of flex - perhaps it is just the pen I have or maybe I use an ungodly amount of force on my FPs! For me it flexes as much as my Lamy 2000 does and whilst that's no flex pen I think the nib is fairly 'springy' and gives pretty decent line variation. (I'm fairly new to fps and am more used to cheap steel nibs so perhaps until I get my hands of a flex pen I won't be fully 'calibrated' so to speak!

As for posting - my pin posts fine - I just never write with pens posted and forgot to show it in this video. I did manage to remember in my Lamy 2k video review though!

Thanks

I think the inner cap on the fountain pen helps the Carene cap stay on my pens, even if it is sometimes shaky and flies off. My Carene rollerball has a smaller internal cap that doesn't reach down so far, and it seems the cap is trying to grip the barrel metal on metal/lacquer. My rollerball cap doesn't grip the barrel end at all. I am learning to not post it. Hard to learn new things at 65.

They must have a different rollerball model for the USA. Those French want their money back for financing our Revolution, 1777. Cutting plastic inner cap by three cents worth of plastic per unit, long way to go.

I have to admit, I winced a little even at the pressure of your normal writing, and almost cried when you started flexing the nib. I own a couple vintage flex pens, and a modern Namiki Falcon, and I consider the Carene to be pretty much a nail. Granted, I have a stub nib, which affects the quality, but unless yours is completely different from all the other ones I've seen, I'd be careful you don't push too hard or you might spring the nib.

It's a beautiful pen, though, and one of my favorites. :-)

Nice review  I have several of these pens and they are very nice to use though I do get inky fingers from nib creep on a couple of them. I shall look forward to seeing some more of your excellent video reviews.

This is a great job for your first review. I can't add anything to the comments. Thanks for taking the time to do it.

The difference between the inner cap of the pen and of the roller ball has nothing to do with cost cuts, but with better sealing of the tip to prevent the RB from drying.
