Diamine Sapphire Blue Smells Like Mould (Mold)?

Yes, MUSTY is the perfect word for that smell. I must have had the wires mixed up in my head and as Mouldy and Musty often happened together in my experience, my brain must have short circuited and I overreacted with reverse placebo allergy symptoms to boot.

Don't you just hate it when that happens! :D

Sapphire blue is only very slightly purple. Compared with mediterranean blue here. The paper is crappy quality student notepaper, so lots of feathering

This image is closest representation of these two inks what computer screens would permit

I put my savings to test

Lamy & Pilot FPs the Best

No more I even think of the rest

The diamine sapphire blue is my favourite color. I smelled all the diamine inks that i have - sapphire, saragasso, turquoise, presidential. They all have different smells - but nothing olfactory to be detected even from 6 inch distance.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread.

A couple of days ago I got a handful of Diamine ink samples one of which is Sapphire Blue.

It does have very much a musty odour unlike the others which have none, although the Syrah does have a mildly "organic" smell.

I just found this old post after using D Sapphire for the first time. You have reminded me that I am often grateful to be nasally impaired. I don't smell anything from this ink. On the other hand, I have trouble smelling roses and cat deposits in the litter box. Thanks for letting me know that my ink is stinky.

I bought a 30 ml bottle of Diamine Sapphire a few months ago and have not used it because of the smell. It has a strong moldlike smell.

I put my best hounds on the scent of this, and they're unanimous: it came from the ole factory smelling that way, an unpleasant and unnerving but harmless accident. If you have mice, you might put a few drops of the ink around the baseboards.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

The smell of ink is for me very interesting, the good smell on the one hand and the bad on the other. I experienced the Diamine inks up till now as more neutral whereas I love the smell of Sailor inks. Diamine Sapphire is a nice blue and I will test it.

Yes. This has been my experience, too... I even sent a bottle back to retailer because of this smell.

There are a couple more Diamine blues that have this moldy smell as well... one is WES Imperial Blue... and my memory is slipping on the other one, but it seems to be common to their purple-toned medium blues.

When we went through this two years ago, I was lucky I only had a sample bottle of Diamine Sapphire Blue and I was down to the last converterful (neologism alert) of it. I dumped first and asked questions later and had no qualms about that approach, even when I found out there was nothing to worry about. I'd like to think I would've hesitated if I'd had a full full-size bottle of it.

I've seen somewhere that Diamine says it's the smell of a violet/purple dye they use.

Hi Lgsoltek, et al,

Based on my experience with Diamine inks, I'd be tempted to buy this, but it seems to be exclusive to their purple-toned middle blue inks... their purple-toned dk. blue inks like Bilberry and their straight purple inks like Damson and Amazing Amethyst don't have that moldy odor.

Does anyone know if their Imperial Purple has a moldy odor? (I can't track down my bottle and I have to leave for work).

I think there may be some kind of (chemical) reaction when their violet dyes are blended with their middle blue dyes that causes this phenomenon, (because their Sapphire and WES Imperial Blue are blue inks, but with DEFINITE violet/purple tones).

Oh, well, it's a mystery to us all...... we're only the hapless pawns in the hands of the pen and ink makers.

:D

I bought a bottle of Sargasso Sea and Sapphire blue. Both are very smelly. both have a very bad smell. I get a headache when I smell this inkt. Now I use the Pilot Asa-Gao. The Diamine colors are perfect but the smell is very bad. The Majestic blue is oke

I like Diamine Sapphire Blue enough that I'm willing to put up with the aroma. When I feel myself getting nauseated I just jab my leg with a sharp pair of scissors.

Hi Piroe, et al,

I know what you mean; it's only their purple-blues, (i.e., blue-violet's), that have that odor. It's not pleasant... but I don't find it that offensive as to make me quit using them... mind you, I live in Jersey, so I've built-up a pretty high tolerance for smells. :D

Be well and enjoy life... or as close to it as you can get. :)

P.S.: Sorry to hear it gives you headaches. :(

Some of their dyes do have characteristic odours. Just one of those things.
