Hello all,

Last time I posted pictures of LAMY_lady_set.

Today, I would like to show you a pen not as well known: LAMY 17 special.

Very nice - I have a red Ratio 47P that is very similar to that with but with a stainless jewel on top and a steel FK nib.

Hello, very nice. I believe, the pens with the jewel you mentioned are even older ones than the one I just posted. There is another LAMY 17 special in my collection with that kind of jewel. Thank you … Jan

Hi

Thanks for the pics. I noticed you took the cap apart. It seems very like the 27 cap. How do you put it back together? I am not clear on where the spring goes. If you can describe it briefly, I would be grateful.

Thanks

David.

Hello David,

Thank you for your interest and question. The mechanism is quite smart in these LAMY caps.

I tried to draw the steps in the picture:

A. first, using a straight thin wire, or paper clip, you position the spring to the place where the arrow is pointing. There is a tiny hole in the metal plate;

B. step two and three is to put the plastic ring on the metal plate and place the spring between the “open ends”;

C. step four is to place the clip inside the cap. This is easy because of the clip and cap profiling;

D. then the next step is to place 1) 2) and 3) inside the cap. The spring has to be placed at an exact position, so it gives the clip its “resistivity” and function. It goes to the opposite end of where the outside of the clip is;

E. steps 5) and 6) are easy. The jewel screws into the metal plate and fastens the whole mechanism.

Hello Jan

Thank you very much, your description gave me the breakthrough I needed to understand how to do it. I thought the hole in the brass bit was somehow functional, but it is actually just for positioning and insertion. I was able to use a pin to hold the spring in place while I was sliding it into the cap. (A length of thin copper wire would have been better.)

I was doing this on a Lamy 27 which is slightly different. The "open" piece above #2 in your picture is missing from the 27. Instead, the cap has a channel cut into the interior to hold the spring. So it is not possible to put the parts together as a unit before inserting them into the cap. Instead, you have to get just the brass piece and spring into the cap while the clip is already in place. So I used a pin which I put into the brass piece from the bottom, through the hole, and then slid the spring onto it. I slid those two parts into the cap, with the clip already inside the cap, but tilted back 90 degrees. This allowed the pin to pass by it. Once the spring was in the channel, I could wiggle the clip so that the far end was over the spring. Then I let the pin drop out. Then I put on the outer ring and screwed in the "L" jewel.

I doubt that is clear, but the good news is that it worked. My clip is spring-loaded again.

Thank you again.

David.

Hello David,

I believe you have the younger version of the LAMY 27, probably 27/30; 31; 32? Then I think your method must be slightly different, and you are right. As it can be seen from the picture bellow (LAMY 27/32) the plastic “No 2” part is not “open” but (and that cannot be seen from the picture) there is slot cut inside it to place the spring

I am glad you put your cap together. I remember the first time when I was taking it apart and had no idea what to expect, that (i) I bent the clip, and (ii) the spring was shot somewhere in the room

Hi Jan

Thanks for the great photos.

Your surmise is correct. I was talking about a Lamy 27/30. I also have a Lamy 27/30n which I expect is similar.

I realised the main difference. Both of those pens have plastic caps not metal. In a metal cap, it is essential that an additional plastic ring is supplied to create a channel for the spring. It would be too difficult to build up the metal in a metal cap to have a channel. So, both of my 27s do not have any plastic ring as you indicate at all, instead, as I noted, the plastic cap itself has a channel cut in the cap.

Thanks also for the enthusiasm about Lamy pens. The 27/30n I have has a delicious broad nib. I sold a 27/30n with a KM nib that was so easy to write with and I am going to sell this 27/30 with an EF nib. I am keeping my Lamy Profil 81, which is a splendid pen. And of course I have a 2000. (We have similar tastes, because I also have a Montblanc 254, which I enjoy.)

Please keep up your interesting posts, you might inspire me to get another Lamy. I've already decided to start searching for a 27/32n.

Thanks again for the time you put into your posts.

David.

Hello David!

Now I finally got it right! Yes, of course, the plastic cap! There is the difference, and you are right. There is sometimes a problem with the plastic cap as the inside might be worn out and then the clip is sideways.

Love the 27/30

Thank you for your comment, David.
