Okay, so let me see if I can recapitulate how this would work - and I'm sorry for being slow because you have had to explain this to me before.

In theory, I could take and make a page. Scan it with the blue wool. Put the sunny side and the wool in the window and test again in 3 hours, then once a day each day for a week.

No problem! Here's how I would describe what I would do. But you have the basic idea.

To start, take your controls and the control wool scale and put that in your dark drawer. Put the samples and sample wool scale in the window.

After 3-4 hours compare the control blue wool with the sample blue wool. If the sample has changed, then compare the control inks with the sample inks to see if any have noticeably changed. Any that have noticeably changed should be recorded as "1" since that is the first lightfastness level. I'd simply use a black ink and write a "1" next to that ink on the control.

Put everybody back either in the windrow or drawer.

The next day, check the control blue wool against the sample blue wool. Has the second control strip started to change? If no, put everyone back. If yes, then again compare the inks controls to samples to find the ones that have noticeably changed (not including the once already changed). Any that have changed, they also get the "1" rating. Put everyone back.

Check the next day (in theory you could wait a day, but since we're new at this, be safer). If the third sample blue scale has started to change, then compare the inks again, and any that have a noticeable difference, and haven't been marked earlier, now get rated "2". Then put it all back.

By this time you probably don't have to check every day. Maybe every other or every three days. By the time you get to the fifth scale, you may have to check only once a week.

Also, I wouldn't just tape the samples and blue wool scale to the window. There's two issues there. One is that the top of the scale/samples isn't getting the same amount of light at the bottom as they aren't more "perpendicular" to the sun. Ideally they should be taped to say cardboard that's tilted back say 15º at the top. Also this will keep them of the hot window and simply expose them to light. I'm reading the blue wool scales are somewhat sensitive to heat as well, and we wouldn't want to change them prematurely. And some inks might actually be somewhat lightfast, but not heat stable. I know in your location there's no way to avoid heat :)

Let me know if that is clear, and if not, I'll fill in what I can!

Can we do a more limited run say in my office?

Sure. Do you think 50 would be too many? If not, maybe pick colors from across the spectrum, and a range of brands.

From your past tests, you probably won't want to include many (maybe just a few) that you know will do poorly just to gauge.

And it may not be so very important to know whether a particular ink is rated 1, 2, or 3 as all of those categories from an artistic perspective are considered "fugitive". They may last a decent time in a notebook, but will eventually degrade.

PS the cards are ordered, and to be shipped direct to you. I'll PM a tracking number when I get one.

Voss - what ink is this pink?

Noodler's Shah's Rose. I think I included a guide to what is on the page, but if not see the quote below. Order on the page is the same is as the order listed.

What I settled on was to try different solvents at four dilutions (1:1, 1:5, 1:10, and 1:20). I wanted to bring to 1:20 since that is where I stopped on the last experiment. The ink diluted was Noodler's Shah's Rose.

The solvents tried were: Distilled Water, Whiteness of the Whale, Isopropyl Alcohol (labeled 91% but old so may be less because of water absorbed from air), Blue Ghost, and Glycerin.

Hi Amber, is this test taking place this year or next year? I've prepared the sheet below featuring two inks that were not thoroughly reviewed until now - the Iroshizuku Murasaki Shikibu and the Platinum Pigmented Blue, plus an assortment of ball point pens that are pretty much complementary in use to our beloved fountain pens. If the test will start next year, I could stick this in my window now and get some early results. Also could you please PM me your address again, since the co-crazy-view I sent some time ago has not yet reached you I'm afraid I got it wrong last time. Please let me know what you think - stick this in my window or send it to you.

OH, you should do this one. It is super cool. I won't take the 2013 ones done for another couple of months. It will have been a year long test. So, these might go up this year, but might not. So, definitely put these up. While you are inked, be sure to write me a letter and I'll add it to the 2015 fade tests so we can compare the light in LV to the light where you are.

BTW, I think your letter arrived.

Ok, I did a second sheet which is similar (minus Platinum Blue Black, I just cleaned the pen and I'm not gonna refill it with Iron Gall :P ). I'll send the first sheet (the scanned one) to you via snail-mail, and I'll use the second sheet on my north window. Apparently there's enough UV there, with another test I got significant fading in 4 days only....

I have committed a bit of a blunder.

I was cleaning pens this evening and noticed the dip pen holder I have been using for all of my Scans/Samples of latethat I have been posting saying is an FPR Broad nibis in fact not a FPR Broad. The broad is on a different holder. The nib I have been using is actually a FPR Medium or an FPR Fine; unfortunately, those two nibs are not marked, so I am not sure which it is. At some point I will try to figure it out, but last time I tried doing that with these sizes I was not 100% confident in my conclusion.

This applies to the sheets I submitted here, as and the following posts:
