I have a Pelikan Level 5 fountain pen that won't write. Anyone know a good repair service or any advice on the Level 5?

Good Evening!

I have several Level pens and have some experience with them.

Assuming that the pen fills with ink, the next thing to examine are the reservoirs in the barrel. There are two; the large one (I call it the ink reserve, and the small one near the nib. I call that one the writing reserve. These two communicate with a valve assembly controlled by the knob at the rear of the barrel. Turned one way, the valve stem will move forward and allow the writing reserve to fill with ink. Once that happens, the knob must be turned back to close the communication between the two reservoirs. Doing that moves a small rubber stopper on the end of the valve stem out of the way so ink can flow to the nib.

Whew...

I have seen that ink can take quite a while to move down to the nib. When I encounter that, I will dip the nib in ink and store the whole pen nib down for a few hours. That usually does it for me.

If it still will not write, then the stopper on the end of the valve stem might have come loose. Fixing that is another thing entirely...

Chartpak does not have any spare parts for Level pens, but they do have entire barrel assemblies.

Hope this helps. In spite of all the bad press these pens have gotten, I'm quite fond of them.

That's very helpful. I would really like to get it working and now I have a start.

Clean a Pelikan Level Pen?

You need an empty ink bottle for Level Pens. (and patience)

1.Fill the ink bottle with water. (Often the bottle cap is very tight)

2.Fill the pen with water. (From the barrel end)

3.Twist the barrel end and let the water flow into the front chamber.

4.Let the water go out from the front opening. (If possible, remove the nib and the feed)

Repeat 3. and 4.

If the pen barrel became empty, fill the pen again with water.

If the ink bottle became empty, fill the ink bottle with water.

Repeat endlessly until you feel you've done enough.

p.s.

I think it's not a good idea to disassemble a Level Pen for cleaning.

Hi Tom,

I have a few Level pens. I just took the B nib out of my yellow L65, hoping to remove the feed too. Yeah, well it snapped off about 2mm inside the section. Suddenly it was a

"Disassemble number 5 " pen for the experience. I got the valve out and the ink rinsed out. do you have a spare feed for an L65? Is it possible to remove the broken feed? I live in Bloomington, IN. 812 558 1590

Christof did a wonderful post on disassembling Level 5 pens on the Pen Exchange board way back in 2010. Here's the link
