Wow. There's a company that doesn't believe in an entry-level line. I think the cheapest pen on their site was 500 euro. I'm sure they're nice pens, and a fun shop to look through, but wow.

Well if you live outside of Europe you get the VAT back...which is 15%-20% if I recall correctly and they do offer free shipping but yes they are expensive. I will buy one after I buy a Romillo.

 

The shapes and the materials are what really impressed me. One of the old ebonites was made from a bocce ball from the 1930s and many of the celluloids are the same vintage celluloids that old OMAS pens were made out of. Each Oldwin is unique and the production is very limited, they have a hard time finding the materials they wish to use.

 

All of the standard size pens (still very large) have number 7 Bock nibs that are all finished and tuned by Oldwin in France. I tried a medium and it wrote like a true medium not some fat overly juicy line that I accustomed to with most European pens. They also put the threading at the end of the section near the nib sleeve so you never touch the threading while writing.

 

I am getting much more picky about the pens that I am willing to add to my collection and I think an Oldwin is definitely worthy.

The nib you can see in my avatar belongs to this large cigare shaped Goldfink from the fifties, I suppose still a Wunderfüller. It the biggest I have ever been confronted to.

Jinhao 159 has a #6 not a #8 nib.

 

Pilot#15 is smaller - in the width, the length is nearly identical to a MB149.

However, the nib of a Pilot Custom Urushi is huge - #30 Pilotsize.

 

Sailor Kingprofit (or also called 1911 KoP) has a nib very similar in dimensions to the MB149.

 

And do not forget the #50 Namiki pens.

Really? My Jowo #6 doesn't have any 6 stamped on it.

 

#8 isn't so much bigger than #6, btw.

Difference in length is quite small in case of Jowo #6 and #8, more in the width. But difference between #6 and #8 in terms of length is very apparent and big in bock.

8 refers to the diameter required of the section hole to accommodate the nib.

 

Commonly available #8 nibs are as follows:

Jowo (covers all their derivative pens)

Bock (covers all their derivative pens)

Pelikan m1000

MB 149

Pilot Custom Urushi

Sailor King of Pen

Montegrappa (I believe they are bock?)

Delta Roma Imperiale Oversize

Goldfink

 

GvFC Pen of the year is not #8. It's #6. GvFC does not use #8 nib on any of it's pens.

Classic pen Uses the KOP nibs so covered under Sailor King of pen.

Pilot #15 is #6 nor #8 and much smaller than MB 149 nib.

For what it is worth there is no standard on nib sizes. Compare a #8 from a Parker, Waterman, Eclipse, and a Diamond Medal and you will see. Of course I speak of vintage nibs here. Bigger still are Waterman 10s and Parker 12s. Biggest nib I've owned was on a dip pen, seem to recall it was ~2+ inches long and around 3/4" wide. If Nishimura is reading...he may have a picture.

How about waterman patrician? its large but relatively short.

Waterman one hundred year os with #18 NiB?

Marukin large size, longer than patrician

Montegrappa earlier limited edition (la traviata, civilization, enigma, etc. I believe they are jowo nibs)

I have another vintage japanese parley nib which is very wide but relatively short.

Currently under COVID lockdowns -- but some of the larger Ranga models did have an option for #8 nibs (though I don't recall if only the gold nib was available; all of mine have the #6, mostly titanium, 2 gold).

I have a big Warranted music nib that dwarfs any of the ringtops I’d want to plant it in...it’s a real quandary. I may have to buy a flat-topped something and have my jeweller put a ring finding on it.

I came across the Ranga option and actually have two Ranga pens, i.e., a small bamboo with a titanium nib and a model 4c. I dislike the model 4c but quite like the bamboo. However, not enough to get another.

 

I may well wait in the line for a Conid KingSize. I'm sure the line is growing for the apparent plan for reopening orders in September.

      @bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.

      @bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

      @bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

      What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.

      Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

      In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.

      No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍

      @FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

      I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

      I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill.
