Inky T O D - Do You Ever Buy Inks That Are Really Similar?

Yes, I'm afraid I do, especially when it comes to blue inks. I'm on a perpetual quest to scratch the itch of replacing Parker Penman Sapphire. And so hence I buy inks that look close, or that might have enough similarity to PPS that I could be happy with....

I don't want to confess how many blue inks I own... I'm in denial!

Occasionally I buy ink just because it is similiar to another ink. I have for a while now been hunting for a ink which is close to Eau de Nil with just a hint more blue, so I ended up with many blue inks which lean towards green - but haven't got a winner yet ;) That said, because of the very same quest I also own a couple of turquoise inks which looked darker in reviews and scans. While those aren't all that similar I still find them very much alike.

So it somewhat depends on color for me. I could imagine to own many similar shades of blue, blue-black and purple, but not of red and turquoise - to name a few.

Out of about 60 inks over half are blue or nearly blue. I do like those colours which verge onto green or purple, but unless they can be taken for blue they don't count.

So, yes, I have lots of very similar inks - virtually the entire Diamine bluish range. I love Asa Blue and Misty Blue but am not keen on Kensington Blue. My wife cannot tell the difference.

But as someone said above, even if the colours are so similar, the inks behave differently and combined with different pens and papers give a different experience.

And of course, if we of the Inky Nuthouse don't keep on buying, then how are our favourite manufacturers to keep going? We have a duty to buy all the ink we can.

Misty Blue is like Eau de Nil with the green taken out. Try a bottle and maybe mix them.

This is exactly the situation where I would buy the sample instead of the bottle - if I was looking for a specific color with just a hint of another color in it - and I was having difficulty finding it. Otherwise, I would never even make a dent in the bottles that I had purchased, but weren't exactly what I was looking for.

Franklin-Christoph, Italix, and Pilot pens are the best!
Iroshizuku, Diamine, and Waterman inks are my favorites!

Apica, Rhodia, and Clairefontaine make great paper!

Yes, but I try to avoid it. I don't like being cluttered with too many close shades. But I don't own that many inks anyway (~10).

I will have to try that one. I had it on my list a while ago but then dropped it in the last second to save some money

And yes, it would be better to go with samples on occasion, but they are hard to come by where I live. And I do like blues with a hint of green so I don't mind having more than one, since a couple don't work so well in some of my pens. Also, if the ink in question is from Diamine I just get the 30ml bottle if I don't trust the swap.

I buy the samples in that case, because, the ink can and likely will look different out of MY pen than the online sample.

I did this when looking for a DARK blue; Diamine blue-black, majestic, and midnight.

I'd buy all of those. Especially both the BB and the Cactus Fruit. CF is nice and searing while the BB is slightly bluer, shadier, and most of all has the prettiest green sheen I've ever seen. Both are totally worth it.

The other reason for buying similar ink is the inks characteristics.

Example, I have Waterman and Cross/Pelikan blue and black inks.

The reason is I use the wet Waterman ink in my dry pens, and the dry Cross ink in my wet pens to manage ink flow.

So far I've only bought two inks in the same color family once (burgundy and Shah's Rose). My next color is probably going to be a brown, which is a color I never would have thought I would like, but after seeing browns on a couple letters, I've decided I like it a lot. I think my first step will be some samples.

Yes, but not on purpose! It's not practical to get samples where I live so I have to do a lot of research, which isn't helped by screen variations with devices connected to the web... After a very long struggle I finally managed to get Bleu Myosotis flowing, but it's so close to Asa Gao (on a wet pen) that I've sent the latter on holidays.

You got rid of the AG? I'd dump BM first, I never could enjoy the ink.

Brown looks good on a cream colored paper.

I have a bottle of Akkerman Simplistes Violet that is similar to my bottle of Diamine Imperial Purple. It was bound to happen; I tend to gravitate toward the purples.
