The Best #6 Nib

Betweenthelines

Recommended Posts

Hello folks,

Well with my new acquisition of a Micarta from Pendleton Brown, I finally have a pen that accepts 'standard' swappable nibs. I am sure his butter line stub will be an absolute delight, but given that I can easily buy an extra fine round to swap in, I figure 'why not?', even if I'll never use it!

So, in your opinion, who makes the best #6? Goulet? Edison?

Also, where can I buy Knox and other cheap #6 nibs in interesting sizes? Specifically small italics (0.6)?

Thank you!

I have a Goulet 1.5 and I LOVE it. Others have said great things about Knox nibs as well (they are also significantly cheaper than most others).

They are found at xfountainpens.com

Meisternibs sells #6 JOWO nibs in several finishes for very reasonable prices. I like that they don't have a logo engraving.

I can't answer for the Ti nibs, but for #6's at xfountainpens the Nemosine nibs come in .6 and .8 calligraphy (italic) for $7 and Bulow nibs (M only, but good to practice grinding) at $3.

Also check indy-pen-dance.com for Bock @$12.50, and Schmidt @$3.

I have no relationship with any of these companies except they take my money!

I've got two Goulet nibs, 1.1 and 1.5 in two-tone on their way to me now, for my Micarta. I keep hearing great things about the Goulet nibs.

Franklin-Christoph, Italix, and Pilot pens are the best!
Iroshizuku, Diamine, and Waterman inks are my favorites!

Apica, Rhodia, and Clairefontaine make great paper!

The Goulet nibs are great, I have their 1.1 in my nemosine eyedropper, it's unreal.

My recent experiences with # 6 nibs lead me to believe that the Goulet JoWo nibs are the best off-the-shelf nib available. Their nibs work without fiddling with them and adjustment is not necessary. Cost is moderate, about $15 each. xFountainPens has good Knox nibs, require some adjustment and tuneup grinding, but run about half of what the Goulet nibs cost. Cheapest of the nibs are the Nemosine, at about $7 each, also available from xFountainPens. Good nibs but regrinding, tweaking for flow, and tuning will be necessary to get the nib to work well. However, when properly set up, the Nemosines write well and are a sturdy, dependable nib.

I am adding a few Konrads and Ahabs to my collection of pens, so am buying a few nibs here and a few nibs there. To summarize, if you only want one nib, go with Goulet pens for dependability and performance. If you tinker and adjust nibs, might be fun to try the Nemosine or Knox nibs.

Enjoy,

+1 on the Goulet nibs. I have their EF, F, and M nibs and all three wrote smoothly without adjustment. I use them in my Konrad and Jinhao X750. Planning to try one of their stubs next. Can't beat $15 per nib for near perfection.

Favorite pen/ink pairings: Edison Brockton w/EF 14K gold nib and Noodler's 54th Massachusetts; Visconti Pinanfarina w/EF chromium conical nib and Noodler's El Lawrence; Sheaffer Legacy w/18k extra fine inlaid nib and Noodler's Black; Sheaffer PFM III fine w/14k inlaid nib and Noodler's Black; Lamy 2000 EF with Noodler's 54th Massachusetts; Franklin Christoph 65 Stablis w/steel Masuyama fine cursive italic and DeAtramentis Document Blue; Pilot Decimo w/18k fine nib and Pilot Blue Black; Franklin Christoph 45 w/steel Masuyama fine cursive italic and Noodler's Zhivago; Edison Brockton EF and Noodler's El Lawrence; TWSBI ECO EF with Noodler's Bad Green Gator.

As far as I know, Edison/Meister nibs and Goulet nibs are both made by Jowo and are basically the same thing. The last several that I got from Goulet have been excellent. Jowo seem to have perfected their nib tuning, and the EFs were really nice.
