Need Assistance Identifying A Cross Pen, And Finding A Refill

Hello to all,

Like the topic says, I need some assistance and perhaps this is the place to ask it, perhaps not. I am not a pen collector per se. I do have many pens, but rarely do I use them past their original fill. Allow me to explain a bit, here. I have several cross pens I recieved over the years, but had stopped using them after they ran out of ink, or I used them up to a point where I lost interest in the pen. This happens to be the case with this particular pen I am about to ask you about. This pen is NOT a fountain pen. Second, I used it until it ran out of ink, then stopped using it. Several years I ago I rediscovered this pen in a drawer and wanted to use it again. I took the ink cartrige out intending to replace it, however, I lost the cartrige so I couldn't replace it. Fast Forward a few more years, and here I am again wanting to use this pen. But, I still cannot locate the proper refill for it nor have I seen any of these pens in the current Cross lineup.

My wife got this for me back in 1997. It is not the statndard (common) cross pen. This pen had a particularly different ink cartrige. The ink was not the standard ballpoint, it was more of a felt tip type ink (if that makes sense). I don't want to say it was gel ink, because, well, I don't think it was. Anyway, I enclosed pics of the pen body in the hopes that someone may know something about this pen. Like I inferred above, I am not a collector and really know next to nothing about pens.

If this is the wrong forum, could someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks for any assistance.

Looks like a "select tip" pen.

Unfortunately they no longer make the 'select tip' refills for the early select tip pens.

I remember reading of someone who got a Sheaffer ball/gel refil to fit, I think with an adapter.

Hi, One possibility is a 'Selectip' porus point refill.

You might have a look at the various Cross brand refills shown here;

http://www.refillfinder.com/catalog/felt-tip-ink-cartridges-23-1.html

Also various writers have tried refills from other makers, Uniball, Pilot and Sheaffer, but worth trying if you have any other pens to try their refills in your Cross pen.

It is often found that refills from totally different brands will, or can be made to fit.

You may use a Cross Selectip refill. While Cross no longer makes the marker-type refill, Cross makes a very nice gel ink refill. You may examine the Cross Selectip refills at http://www.cross.com/refills-and-ink/shop-all-pen-and-pencil-refills/by-writing-type/rollerball-selectip.aspx and you may purchase these refills at Staples as well as other office supply stores.

BTW what I meant is at some time, Cross made a change to the select tip pens.

The Cross refills today, will not fit the older select tip pens.

I cannot tell you how to tell them apart except to try the refill. I got my refill from Staples and when it did not fit, took it back.

GREAT! I knew that the Cross Selectip refil would fit your pen as I have a similar model. In addition, Cross always makes sure that its refills fit earlier models of their pens. I hope that you will enjoy your pen! : )

I forgot to mention that Cross still makes the porous point refills,http://www.cross.com/refills-and-ink/shop-all-pen-and-pencil-refills/by-writing-type/porous-point.aspx, for Selectip pens. If you like marker-point refills then you may enjoy using the porous point refill. Since I am not a fan of markers and since the rollerball is "closer" to a fountain pen than a marker-type refill is, I do not use the porous point refills. But, I mention this one as it gives you another option for your pen.

Again, enjoy your pen! : )

In case you are curious if Cross still has some Selectip pens similar to yours, it does. Cross has a Classic Black Selectip pen similar to your Medalist on sale, http://www.cross.com/classic-century-classic-black-selectip-rolling-ball-pen.aspx.

Your pen is one of the original Classic Century series. Cross has redesigned the end section of the Classic Century Selectip. If you compare the pen in http://www.cross.com/classic-century-classic-black-selectip-rolling-ball-pen.aspx and that for the Classic Century Medalist in http://www.cross.com/pens-and-pencils/shop-all-pens-and-pencils/by-writing-type/rollerball-pens.aspx then you will see the difference in the end sections.

If you visit the page for the Classic Black Selectip Classic Century, http://www.cross.com/classic-century-classic-black-selectip-rolling-ball-pen.aspx, then you can view an additional Selectip refill option, the Jumbo Ballpoint Refill, by clicking the Add Refill button. This refill did not display on the ballpoint refill page or the rollerball refill page. I mention this refill in case you want a ballpoint option for your pen. The multiple options for Cross Selectip pens is what made these pens popular.

I think I might need some of these. Or more pens to go with them, ;)
