I grew up in a house that had a lot of original art and we had a Durer etching that hung in the dining room for quite a while.

It was a town with streets, drawn from view of a second story window.

The AD signature was disguised as a plaque hanging in front of a store.

It was small, maybe 5" X 8" but it was a good impression and the detail was fanatic.

My Mom was an art dealer and all that art was what she called "inventory" In other words don't get too attached!.

Eventually it sold. Its one of the most missed, well definitely in the top 100 or so that I wanted to keep.

Great story. How wonderful to have been able to grow up in a house full of beautiful artworks!

Melencolia is the most controversial Durer in regard to interpretation. (sorry Durer, I don't have umlauts)

The many elements have been open to discussion, and some puzzle art scholars to this day.

One unsolved mystery is that of the "magic numbers".

The magic numbers stuff is part of the plot of Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol. I thought this work is the one mentioned, but the specifics of the numbers in the box don't match what I'm seeing here. Nope, it's the *other* engraving, "Melancholia II" I'm thinking of, where it includes the date of the work, 1514, as part of the square -- and the math still works....
