Which One Will Be Your Next Fountain Pen ?

Thier.

Recommended Posts

I've seen a Visconti Opera on sale on a second hand website. As the owner is 50 kms far, I.ll go and have a look on it (and perhaps more ) in two days ...... I'm mad about (italian ) fountain pens but there is no way of getting rid of that "disease" .......

Just received, cleaned and inked ......

Hello everyone. I'm a newbie and have spent a joyous few hours reading this thread and following lots of links, from the start! (My children had to fend for themselves).

Please forgive me if I say anything wrong!

Thier, your collection and knowledge are awesome. I've discovered some pen brands and models I didn't know existed and now have a long wish list.

I'm hoping you guys can advise me on what would be good for me, as I've decided to save up for a more expensive pen later in the year. My usual price limit was Pilot Capless/ sailor pro gear slim/ lamy 2000, all of which I love. However, for something amazing, I can push it a bit further (as long as I stop buying for a while.... :0 )

I don't like big or fat pens, or those which are top heavy (I have just returned a TWSBI 580 AL, in purple, because it was much too heavy and back balanced for me - a shame because it looked very attractive. The medium nib was very smooth, though too broad for me - broader than the medium on my Diamond mini.)

I never post my pens and tend to hold them a bit low down, so the #3776 is a bit too big for me (lovely and smooth, though). I think this restricts me a lot, as many beautiful pens seem to have very long nibs and/ or big sections.

I haven't ventured into the vintage market. I don't feel ready yet! I also don't like bidding and waiting on eBay. It just seems too time consuming and stressful! Maybe when I retire (a long time!).....

The orange Caran d'Ache looks beautiful...

Welcome, Bex! It's good to have you here on FPN! You've come into a fun, fulfilling hobby, and your fellow hobbyists are all great folks. Since you're a newbie, I'm sure you'll have plenty to post here as you begin to accumulate pens. Best wishes!

I've been holding off on purchasing anything new for a while now, as I've recently struck out on my own in business and am waiting for cash flow to build. I discovered I am really interested in stubs and italics, and want to get some custom grinds moving forward. By the end of the summer I hope to reward myself with a bespoke pen of some sort after hitting some revenue goals.

However, I discovered last week that a Jinhao X750 that I liked to have in my rotation had gone missing (I suspect the three-year-old got a hold of it, and my wife conveniently disposed of the mangled pen thinking I wouldn't miss it).

I fretted about the missing pen for all of 15 seconds, then a big smile broke out on my face --it's only a $5.00 USD pen on eBay. I quickly opened the app on my phone, went to the same seller where the previous one had come from, and now a replacement is on it's way. Gotta love some of these cheap (but decent) Chinese pens! No idea when it will be here, but it'll get flushed and filled the Saturday after it arrives.

Oops, just seen the price of the saffron Leman. I think It might be out of my range, unless I control my habit for at least a year - I'm not holding out any hopes.

You might want to try the Italix Churchman's Prescriptor and/or Captain's Commission by Mr. Pen. http://www.mrpen.co.uk/contents/en-uk/d63.html

His place of business is right there in your neck of the woods.

Franklin-Christoph, Italix, and Pilot pens are the best!
Iroshizuku, Diamine, and Waterman inks are my favorites!

Apica, Rhodia, and Clairefontaine make great paper!

Oh thank you, Blue Moon...I think

(My bank account is groaning already!)

I just nearly bought a Carene from WHSmith - very good price (£72.50), but only available in black medium nib. Do you think I'd be able to get the nib swapped at Waterman, (for a F)? Is this being really cheeky?

Off to check out Mr Pen...

I think my next pen will be an Italix :)

Bex 66, Welcome here on fpn. On this thread, you will see the pens lost of us are waiting for, their dream pens, the pen they've just ordered and, yes, it's fine to discover so many things. I personnaly buy many pens on ebay or other second hand websites. Most of the time, people get rid of it because they don not use it and the price you pay for it is affordable .....

You will see, you will post often on this thread when you'll find a pen hat matches your goal of the moment .....

It is NOT "cheeky" @ all. The makers of the pens make this possible & most dealers will offer it as a possibility. As long as they are making the nibs & want to sell the pens I trust the service will continue as most sellers do not attempt to stock all the nib choices available. But enjoy Mr. Pen as well. I certainly appreciated the availability of his nibs when I ordered mine.

I misread your OP. I thought you wanted big and/or fat pens. Let me revise my suggestion. I still recommend the Italix brand by Mr. Pen, but I would suggest the Parson's Essential instead. It's not as large as the first two that I suggested, plus it is the Italix flagship pen. I guarantee that you'll love it. If I'm not mistaken, because of your location, I believe you get free shipping as well. I love the Italix brand, and have three Parson's Essentials myself. I forgot to mention that Mr. Ford, owner of Mr. Pen, provides legendary customer service.

Thanks Blue Moon. I'm already £50 lighter, and still considering the Carene from WHSmith.

I've ordered a Parson's Essential. I noticed that they are lighter (though still quite heavy compared with my others). I think it'll be fine as I've read from a couple of reviews that quite a bit of the weight is in the cap, which I never post. I did have to pay postage. I don't think Mr Pen does free postage to anywhere!

I've emailed Mr. Ford - he's a quick responder, if a man of few words.

I would copy appropriate bits of your messages into my replies, but I'm a techno dunce and haven't worked out how to do it on my iPad yet...

So, thanks, Barkingpig too.

Sadly, I have no idea what my next pen will be. I have several on my list. A Pilot Custom Heritage 92 in the transparent black is most likely. After that I'd like a Custom Heritage 91 with an EF nib to swap into the 92. There are a couple of Sailor Pro Gear slims I am looking into as well. Finally, sort of a grail pen for me simply because I love the look of it so much, is the Pelikan M400 White Tortoise. I think it is a beautiful pen, and I love the size of the smaller Pelikans.

I really want a Namiki Yukari in red but I only think they sell the Yukari Royal in the USA. Anyone know how I can get one?

I bought one a while back from worldlux, alas, they are no longer in business. I really like the red feed.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

Something Italian is calling me - I had my mind set on a Visconti but have recently been looking at Omas.

Not got a bundle of money to spend, probably around £200 mark but whichever brand it is the pen has to be colouful as I find black pens so boring (I already have 3!)

Though I have acquired some brown, turtoise, etc pens lately, most of my pens are black. More than 8... I find them elegant, not boring, even the Pilot Metropolitan which is so inexpensive if you look at its design and in black is an elegant pen. The problem is that if people don't see a high price attached to something they don't perceive it as beautiful and/or desirable. Yesterday I ordered a Franklin Christoph with a clip because I want it to look all black, no distraction, please! I had in the past thought they were boring, but the "ice" variants caught my eyes. Nevertheless I soon turned my eyes to the black ones and I found them super interesting because of their design and features. The 20 Marietta was my choice. I loved the length, the clip in cap, the nibs (OHHH).. But back to the topic. If you look at a pack of black pens together ... Hell, yes, that is boring. But take one or two to a public place, take one out, write, flash it around that is elegant. Colorful? no. Elegant? Yes...

On the contrary, if you take one colorful pen out on a public place, I am sorry, that looks childish and not elegant at all unless it has some black on it. Take a pack of colorful pens topgether, photograph them, look at them, they are just flashy adornments, like a bunch of crayons on Kinder school. Just my thoughts on this. The weirdest color I have is a green Jinhao demonstrator that was included on an EBay buy as agift. A great writer. I filled it with light green ink and it is my highlighter on my journals. I wouldn't use it in the open. I know everyone has their preferences and they are all good. Take the big pens. I don't like them, but something is telling me that when I am bored with the thinner and smaller, I will start looking at the big boys. SO far I prefer the smaller nibs but I have a few big headed and longer ones (2) that I am liking. Myy preferences change...

My ideal next pen would a demonstrator Sailor Pro Gear Slim II. Unfortunately they don't exist...yet.

Maybe someone can correct me, and enable me to part with some more cash.

Come on, Blue_Moon, I'm counting on you...! ;)

I know there's a clear demo Sapporo. I'm waiting for the new design. Does anyone know if Sapporos are going to be discontinued eventually?
