FOLKS: SORRY FOR THE UPPER CASE. THERE IS A REASON FOR IT THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SHOUTING, ANGER OR EMPHASIS!

KEEP IN MIND THAT LOSING BY JUST A SMALL AMOUNT DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN THAN WERE YOU TO BID JUST A BIT HIGHER YOU COULD HAVE WON THE PEN. ALL THAT THE SELLING PRICE REPRESENTS IS THAT THE SUCCESSFUL BIDDER WAS WILLING TO PAY WHAT YOU WOULD PAY PLUS THE MINIMUM EBAY INCREMENT. FOR EXAMPLE: YOU SET A SPENDING LIMIT OF $40 FOR A PEN BUT IT SELLS TO BIDDER X FOR $40.50. BIDDER X MAY HAVE BEEN WILLING TO PAY $75 FOR THE PEN BUT DIDN'T HAVE TO BECAUSE OTHER BIDDERS (INCLUDING YOU) DROPPED OUT. TO WIN THAT PEN YOU WOULD HAVE HAD TO PAY $76, NOT $41. (THE INCREMENTS I'VE USED MAY NOT BE EXACTLY THE ONES USED ON EBAY BUT THE CONCEPT IS SOUND.)

Oh I understand that. Doesn't mean it isn't still irritating -- because it is. The pen I *did* win, the Pelikan 400 with the OB nib, went for my maximum, after hovering for a long time at a more reasonable (for me) price. It jumped at the last bit of the time limit, but it was a case where whoever was bidding me up decided that going beyond that price wasn't in the cards for them. Dunno if it was because it got too high for them, or that they were afraid my maximum was a lot higher still....

I was pretty sure I'd be outbid on the Plum 51 I got a couple of years ago, especially since I wasn't going to home when the auction ended. I extended my maximum a couple of times over the course of the week, just on the basis of nervousness -- but in the end the hammer dropped at below my *intermediate* maximum, even with the shipping charges. Go figure.

I did get happy news on the aforementioned 400 -- even though the shipping info on Ebay said it was due sometime between about a week and a half from now and close to the end of the month, it made Stateside over the weekend. Plus I discovered that I could plug the Deutsche Post tracking # into the USPS tracking website and even though the type of tracking number was different it still worked! So I signed up to get email updates and as of about 5 PM on Tuesday afternoon (it now being just around 1 AM on Wednesday) it had left my area's sort facility, about 20 minutes from my house. Which means that it will probably get to the Pittsburgh office soon (if it hasn't already!) and might just be out for delivery later today! :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01:

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Just got notice that the Omas Ogiva Violet I had on special order with an oblique nib is not going to be available, so there's $500 toward my Nakaya.

I have a 1970s Montblanc Carrera on its way from overseas. A very unique model and not the usual black pen, so am very excited.

Sorry to hear that. I imagine you should be able to find it easily on ebay though!
