Which One Will Be Your Next Fountain Pen ?

Thier.

Recommended Posts

My favorite Conid video is the publicity one done a year or so ago by some university students who copied a novel (The Great Gatsby?) in 24 hours using two or three fills of a single Bulkfiller pen!

This belgian pen is more than attractive and I would like to buy it one of these days ..... On another hand, a friend want to sell me a Pilot Justus 95 for a silly price ...... Well, we'll see

I have a long list of qualities I want (some compatible in the same pen, some not) to acquire in the future, but at the moment, my next pen purchase will probably be just an inexpensive, fine or extra-fine nibbed, C/C pen that takes international carts. That's for usability of ink supply. Beyond that, my mind is on vintage 1930s-40s pens right now. :)

My next has officially arrived from Japan to Classic Fountain Pens... However, I can't decide which nib to order with it. It's a Naka-ai Ao Tamenuri writer with Ruthenium clip and nib.

I have literally changed my mind regarding the nib twenty times in the past two days. Originally I aas going to go with Soft Medium, but I really want the qualities of my Spencerian Falcon, so Spencerian was the choice. Then I reasoned that since I already have a Namiki Falcon Spencerian maybe I should go with a Soft Fine with added flex. Then I went back to Soft Medium after talking to Leigh Reyes -- thinking the Soft Medium offers good variation and it can always be ground to something finer later. ...and now today I'm leaning towards the Spencerian again since elegant and calligraphy are the two key words for this pen. It will not be a daily carry.

I'm giving myself until Monday to decide.

I'm legitimately super excited to find out what you end up choosing. That does NOT sound like an easy decision to make.

Me: I'm thinking my next pen will either be a Sailor Pro Gear or a Pelikan M600 (or M800, if I find one to hold so I can gauge how comfortable it is in my hands). Two very different pens, but the Pro Gear is as a result of talking pens to someone on Instagram and the Pelikans are because, well, I just love Pelikans. The red or blue stripe models...!

I've been in the same boat (though my Nakaya hasn't been ordered yet). Nib choice, I think, is the hardest part. I've been flip flopping around between soft fine, CI, and stub.. I think I finally settled on a 0.5mm stub.

I decided on a Spencerian grind for my Nakaya. I think I was trying to talk myself out of another Spencerian, but all the other grinds I would decide on for a half day or so before I changed my mind again were basically going for a Spencerian type style-- super thin lines with flex. I do highly recommend the soft medium for daily writing as it has a smooth feel and offers a wide range of character flex. But, because my Naka-ai will not be a daily carry And I enjoy calligraphy, doodling, drawing more than note taking, journaling, writing etc I realized the Spencerian is what I wanted all along.

Betweenthelines,

My opinion of your three nib choices... The soft fine offers no flex as is (i had to push insanely hard to get a tiny bit of a thicker line), the stub has really soft edges, but I find Twsbi and goulet stubs offered better line variation. There just wasn't all that much line variation - I thought it would compare more to a TWSBI 1.0 stub, but it just didn't have the line variation. however, it was smooth. The CI offeres the most line variation of the three. It's crisper than the Nakaya stub, but a whole lot smoother than the nakaya formal italic. I would definitely go with the CI unless ultra smooth is what you want then go with the stub. Maybe a a soft fine with added flex?

...and half way through writing this I got a call from LA. My pen is done and shipping tomorrow!

Congrats!

Are you referring to Nakaya's grinds, or John's? I'm referring to a stub or CI made by John. The only thing making me lean more heavily towards a stub rather than CI is because I'm talking about one in the range of 0.5mm.

I think what I tested were John's grinds. The testing booth has the standard Nakaya options and the upcharge John options too.

Thanks for the info, especially because I won't have an opportunity to sample them in the foreseeable future. Perhaps a stub/CI hybrid would be a good choice for me, then.

Enjoy your new Nakaya, and be sure to share some pictures once it arrives!

Well, now I know that I'll definitely be getting the Spencerian modification whenever I get to order my Nayaka. I was planning on using it for drawing and perhaps a bit of calligraphy as well.

Congrats, Thier!

Thank you. If you cross a Justus one day or another, try it .... You won't be disappointed ......

Their,

I really like the pattern on your Justus. It looks different than the pattern on the Justus sold on nibs.com which looks like simple vertical lines. Yours looks like cross hatches or something. Very cool. The Justus is a perfect sized FP.

Right, Finalist. I'm going to make a macro photography of it so that you'll be able to see the pattern and ask your dealer if he can get the same Edited by Thier.
