Inky T O D - Sheen - What Is It? How Do I Get It?

The only thing I would change is the third one. Use paper that has little/low absorbency.

I agree and it seems as if you're on the right track Amber.

Look forward to seeing more results :)

Doing a search for "pure pigment" on Amazon under the "Arts,Crafts and Sewing" section is interesting...

I'm not very fond of sheen, but this topic reminded me of an ink sample series I did a couple years ago. Please excuse the fuzzy photo, but it's the one that captured the sheen best.

BTW, this was written on copier paper bought at a local drug store. It does have a reputation for being FP friendly, but it is sure not a fancy paper. This was written with a Brause italic nib (dip pen).

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I did see the sheen on the Yama Budo / Tomoe and you can see it on the H in the scan.

Okay it's been a little while, and perhaps the ink is a little evaporated. I saw lots of sheen in my latest writing.

On the flip side: how do i suppress sheen?

Use non-coated, absorbent paper paired with a dry writing pen.

I mainly use dark blue inks and I have a few consistent "sheener" inks in Diamine Majecstic, Diamine Sargasso Sea and Private Reserve Electric D.C. Blue. These are all a dark blue ink with a red sheen in any pen, any nib size, all the time. It is something that I've found to be ALWAYS CONSISTENT on Rhodia, Excompta. . . well most Clairefontaine, Tomoe River, any high quality paper that is not going to suck in the ink. a paper that Sheen hasn't shown up on is the ECO line, sugar cane paper, that Staples sells. It absorbs the ink too quickly. Good luck, I'm sure that you will find a sheen that works consistently for you and your writing. I should also mention that for a "medium Blue" Private Reserve's American Blue shades well but has a light red sheen in most nibs. It is not what I would call a dark blue but a "true Blue". Look at a crayon box. you'll see Blue / Purple, Blue/ Black, Blue / towards aqua or torquise . So there is plenty of sheen out there; just figure out what color and what hue; dark, light, bright, and then type the inks color and brand name into google and you'll find pictures of that color's writing sample, swatches, bottle pictures & written reviews of that particular ink. with links to follow to the blog that wrote the review.

Good luck, it's a tough decision to invest in an ink color and hope to get sheen every single time.

Some inks really sheen!

This is Red Cashmere (a test ink). Depending on the concentration, the ink can sheen like mad.

Rouge Hematite has a more golden sheen.

Did some doodling while watching a movie with the pens I had loaded up.

The exceptional sheeners are noted with a superman red S, but many of these inks have some minor sheen. Rhodia Dot paper.
