I would think that the campus police would be able to pull up video feed in the building to see who might have broken into your office?

most of the time campus police are incompetent bunch of morons. when I attended college, all they did was drink coffee and view porn on their computer in their dept hq behind our dormitory buildings

 

I knew this because I went to the front desk to report some physical assault I witnessed that morning. When they went to get paperwork, I happen to glance at their monitor. Shiny melons everywhere.

 

That's when I lost faith for campus police.

 

Its best to bring in State police because they take NO (bleep) from anyone and will go through everything since it is a Felony. because its most certifiably over 1,000 bucks of items. anything under 1k mark is a misdemeanor.

 

I am not sure. maybe someone would chime in on that?

 

 

and i have met professors in their offices, some on-campus diner, sometimes out at union station train station to chat up about nothing, (cue in Seinfeld)

In CA grand theft larceny is considered anything over $950 in value, and it can either be a felony OR misdermeanor.

 

 

Here is the penalty:

 

Penalties

In most cases, the offense of grand theft in California is a wobbler. This means that the prosecutor may choose to charge you with either misdemeanor or
felony grand theft.3

The maximum potential sentence for misdemeanor grand theft is up to one (1) year in county jail.

For felony grand theft, you may be sentenced to sixteen (16) months, two (2) years, or three (3) years of incarceration.4

That guy has a few hundred thousand dollars worth of pens up right now, 57 items. OP should check the rest and see if there are any other matches.

FBI may interfere and take over. any crime occurs over the state line is FBI's jurisdiction so if they intent to sell and ship OUT of the state line bam FBI chimes in I think

i dont see any parker 51, or 1980s 146 on that listing

While I think the cleaning staff is possible, I would, unfortunately, suspect that it is someone you knew...either a colleague or a student who whom you may have mentioned the value of any of your pens, or who might recognize the value. (I am a Detective, but I work almost exclusively Crimes Against Persons cases, so I don't have as much knowledge in property crimes.)

 

I second the recommendation to check pawn shops and other second-hand stores in the area. In the jurisdiction where I work, a photograph is taken of anyone who pawns anything, because theft is such a frequent complaint of those establishments. I don't know if they do that out there, but it would be helpful!

 

Caveat: You are in CA and TX laws are surely different. Neither am I a legal eagle. But my experience may be helpful. if your pens begin turning up in pawn shops and you do get a picture of the seller you may recognize the thief and you will get your pen back (if there is a police report) but the seller's picture is not grounds for prosecution. We were told, "there's no way to prove this person stole your pens even though they may be in possession now." We were shocked.

John, I too am appalled at the theft of your pens. Being new to the FP community I don't know that I can offer much more than my support, which I am happy to give.

 

When searching Craigslist, since it covers many areas, you may want to try a site called searchallcraigs.com. It will search every Craigslist in the country, plus a few of the "Pennysaver" type classifieds, and you can narrow it down to regions if you like.

This is just terrible. What about a student, is there anyone who expressed an interest in your pens? If they have student housing on-campus it would provide a potential thief the perfect base to see the comings and goings from your office building.

I think its one of your students that been eyeing your behavior, timing, and your possessions. and they may have glanced at where you put your case of pens away as they walked by your office.

Yea, forget about Lupita, Chelito, María de Jesús, Cuquita, Tere, Mague, Valentina, Xóchitl, Lourdes, Zapopan, Florentina, and Pancho, Raúl, Candelario, Román, Germán, Alvaro, Fortunato y Damián, they wont risk their Green cards if they have it or their invisible status if they dont. What an awful thing to happen. Must be someone who knows your office, and someone who knows the value of fountain pens. I cant imagine it would be cleaning staff, wouldn't they have keys and therefore not need to remove the glass?

 

My biggest fear is that since the person seemed to know what they were doing, surely they know better than to try and unload them all in one place and immediately. Hopefully they are dumb and get caught.
