Sheaffer Compact Missing Part?

I picked up this lovely gem from The Bay. I finally got around to cleaning it up which consisted of a simple flush and a quick buff. Sadly I believe that my Compact is missing a part.

As compared to my Sheaffer Holly Pen it would appear that the Compact is missing the "collar" which would hold the cartridge in place. I tried it with a cartridge and it was hard to judge if the cartridge was dead on or not.

The pen was writing very well and then the ink flowed stopped. I twisted open the barrel and sure enough the cartridge had dislodged from the nipple and was stuck up inside of the barrel.

So that said. Where would I find such a part and what would it be called if it exists so that I may look for it?

I think it's all there. There should be a ridge in the body that limits how far a cartridge goes in and then the section screwed in to pierce it.

Looks all there to me. Same as the one I own. This pen works well like jar said when you insert a new cartridge (long sheaffer) into the body then screw the section into the body. It will puncture the top of the cart precisely.

One possible gottcha; IIRC the new Sheaffer has an indent in one end. That's not the end that gets punctured.

I used an old Sheaffer cartridge. Flat on both ends. I don't think a long cartridge will fit. I know that the converter does not. Did the cartridges change?

The size and volume of the cartridges remained the same, but the old ones could be pierced from either end while the new ones have a dimple in one end.

Thanks for clarifying jar you are so right. The new cart I was referring to are 2 inches/50 cm in length.

Good deal. Some more cartridges arrived and I'm going to give it another go.

It's all there. Sheaffer used two different connectors on the C/C filled Imperials. They are not interchangeable, nor are the internal parts interchangeable. Yours is used with all plastic barrels, and can be used with the Touchdown Imperials if the connector is changed to one with a nipple for the sac and sac guard. The ones with metal section/connector threads are used with barrels with metal overlays. The metal overlay barrels are a bit shorter inside that plastic barrels, and the metal threads on the section allow the cartridge/converter to sit down lower so that it fits into the barrel. The inside is different - the feed is a bit sorter IIRC, the section and plug for the piercing tube interlock so that the piercing tube doesn't rotate as you screw the connector into the section. Both use the same 0-ring to seal the end of the feed and to keep ink from leaking out the back.
