A Unique Or Unusual Modern Pen?

Ego Id Veto

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Last year I was given 150 AUD to spend on a pen that would be my 21st birthday present.

Sure, there are plenty of regular pens for that price, but I've decided I'd like something unique, that stands out as a present from my uncle that I'll be able to use for many years.

Unique meaning not just any old pen, and something with an unusual characteristic that gives it a bit of character.

I've considered a few Lamys, but those in my price range (CP1, Studio) seem kinda plain. Also I've looked at Pilots, but the only one there I find intriguing is the maple wood one (not a big fan of the Pilot capless).

Any suggestions as to an unusual fountain pen within the 150-200 dollar bracket?

I'm leaning towards the Pilot Custom maple wood, but I thought I might as well ask the opinion of those much more experienced in the modern pen world than me (I'm usually a vintage fan).

Thanks so much for any advice you guys could provide!

How about a custom turned pen? Hand made for you to your specifications. It would probably be at the top end of your price range, but it would be unique.

Faber-Castell Ondoro with the oak finish? Definitely stands out. Costs 165 USD which is around 175 AUD

Not a big fan of that one, but the model 27 looks good. Any reviews on the Mayasuma medium 18k italic nibs?

Having most of my pens adjusted/ground to italic nibs by Mike Masayama the past several years, I can tell you that he has taken pens that wrote OK or so-so before and changed them into superb, heavenly pens to write with.....

So, if you have a chance to get a pen that he's worked on the nib, go for it, assuming you like the pen itself.....

Wow. I was really not looking for any new pens (ha) but this thread has completely ruined that for me. I need an Ondoro now. Period. Not to mention the others. ::sigh::

How about the tree ring pens natural history pen?

It´s unique thats for sure. Since it´s for your birthday you can have the year inscribed in the barrel next to the year it corresponds to.

That would be a cool pen.
