Kaweco Sport Classic Or Pilot Metropolitan

The Pilot Metropolitan/Cocoon/MR seems to be more reliable than the Kaweco Sport. Many people have had problems with the flow of the Kaweco Sport.

My Metro writes much better and feels like a higher value pen than my Kaweco.

I have a Kaweco with a very smooth fine nib, but it goes mostly unused due to it's narrow section. I got it for those times I need to carry a pen in my pants pocket, which just doesn't happen all that often. The length is adequate if posted, and I can see no reason not to post such a pen.

 

That said, and given that the pilot is a metal pen, the deciding factor for you might be weight. I don't know what the Pilot weighs, but most metal pens are on the heavy side, and that, and the narrow section keep me from buying a Metropolitan.

 

The pilot does have the advantage of using cartridges that can be refilled many times with a syringe while maintaining a tight neck, whereas most international carts have a less robust neck and start getting floppy after a few refillings.

 

My advice, however, would be to go whichever weight you would be more comfortable with. The Pilot is 26 grams, the Kaweco 10 grams.

 

And if you, like me, prefer a wider section, consider a Platinum Plaisir. They are fairly light, though robust in girth. The nibs can be hit or miss, but they are the same as the Preppies, so can be had for under $5.00 if you get a dud.

I think I've posted in a similar thread before. I own both and given the choice I think I'd stick with the Kaweco. It's a quirky pen, unlike many others. Mine is the clear demo sport and has held up well for nearly 3 years (I think). Calligraphy nibs can be swapped in too.

I have a white tiger Metropolitan with an italic nib that's a lovely writer and all but it's a bit generic despite the colour. I ended up using the section of a green 78G on the white tiger body to give it a bit of personality. Some may balk at that but hey, we're all different

For your usage, I think the Pilot Metropolitan would be easier to clean. I liked the nibs on the Kaweco Sport pens from what I've tried but I'm not sure if it would be a good fit in your situation. They're a bit small and I find myself having to adjust my hands a little to write with them. With the Metro, I just post and write. I take a lot of notes while at work and I use the Metro the most right now. I think the Metro suits your needs best.

This thread is now sort of old so I would guess you've already made your choice. On the off-chance that you are still considering options, I'd suggest something different. Assuming your budget permits, take a look at the Pilot VP. No cap to have to bother with. Nibs are great. Most of the comments regarding cartridges vs converters for the Metropolitan apply to this pen also. It is a bit heavy, as it is a metal construction. Budget wise, new, you're looking at about $140. I use two as part of my edc; they are tanks!

 

I have seen elsewhere on FPN doctors who like them for use as you've described. I'm not a doctor, but I have used them in environments where I'm on the go and they are really convenient and reliable.

I just purchased a Kaweco Sport after watching my gf use one as a daily writer for a month - sweet Fine nib and a monster ink capacity has got me hooked! As a side note I have a Metro in M nib and it is a great solid pen that feels a lot more $$ than it really is. You do drop a few points in portability though with it.

Just received my MR (European name for Metropolitan, takes international standard cartridges) today. It's great. For a similar price, it's better than my Lamy Safaris, I think.
