Inky T O D - Have You Ever Stopped Using An Ink Because You Are Hoarding It?

Hi,

I don't stop using an ink because it is rare or discontinued, but I become more selective about using them; and use them with pen+paper combos that were proven to give a great result.

When they eventually run out, I have plenty of other inks to keep me amused.

They also make great gifts to those who will appreciate them. I now receive letters written with those inks, which are much more satisfying than ink in a bottle, and writing to someone is likely the best way to re-gift ink.

Bye,

S1

I agree with Sandy1, although I admit I have a few bottles of limited edition ink (one each of MB Collodi, Swift, Balzac) waiting to be tried.

I did, quite some time ago, buy a second bottle of Alfred Hitchcock ink because I started using my first bottle and really like the ink. I go slow with this one, so two bottles should last me quite a while. I'm sure there will be something interesting by the time I run out of this ink.

I have one bottle of Montblanc Alfred Hitchcock and I wont be opening it any time soon. Not unless I can get more.

I have a six pack of the Penman Sapphire (sold a few dozen) and two bottles of the Emerald . I'm not a heavy user, so that alone would last very long for me, but of course I'm not using them exclusively. I've opened one of the Sapphires and an Emerald. I use the Sapphire regularly and I love it, so I won't stop using it just because I can't get more for a reasonable price. I don't know how much I'll treasure the last, lets say, two bottles though...

I might have a wee stash (6 unopened bottles) of Penman Sapphire that won't likely see the light of day anytime soon. But I do have a couple of bottles that have been opened and are occasionally used.

Not a single ink that I won't use. Some of them may be used less than others, but that's just me being me. I definitely have my favorites that are reordered before the bottle is empty, and I guess if I hear about them going out of production I will snap up a few just to make sure I will never run out.

I'm too old to save any for later. The closest I come to hoarding are a couple of inks that I don't like well enough to use very often. Every once in a while I'll try them again to see if my tastes have changed. It happens occasionally.

I haven't full-on *stopped* using any inks, but there are some special occasion inks, to be sure. I only have one bottle of MB Racing Green and Parker Penman Emerald, for example. I do have a couple bottles each of some discontinued Sheaffer colors, though.

So, I will use them, but it has to be in a great pen and it has to be a fill that I will use to the last drop and not allow to sit around and get neglected. It helps that I still have literally hundreds of samples left to try.

'90's Pelikan cartridges

Oh, yeah! Now *these* I am *SUPER* sparing with. I only have 6 Pelikan Khaki cartridges, 6 Mint Green, 3 Moss Green... etc. They've got to last me a lifetime unless I find a trove of more.

I have an almost full bottle of Caran d'Ache Caribbean Sea that I bought for my wife. She uses it when she gets the urge. Also eighteen cartridges of Penman Sapphire. I use roughly one per year, usually during the summer, when I use the Sonnet that won't behave with any other ink. The half empty bottle of Levenger Fireball will last a few more years, maybe less since I discovered how it looks when applied with a Pendleton nib.

The only discontinued ink I am hording is a century old bottle of Wirt blue-black. It contains only powder and I haven't yet worked up the nerve to reconstitute it. (Advice appreciated on that one.)

I am also hording Noodler's Ottoman Rose. A few years ago I heard a rumor that it was being discontinued and promptly bought two bottles before learning the rumor was false. It will get used eventually.

I can't say I've found an ink I'd hoard... yet. I tend to have a utilitarian view towards ink: it's meant to be written with. However, I can't rule out finding a special brew some day that I might become especially enamored of!
