Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

The Pentel Graphgear 1000 fits the bill, but the look isn't for everyone (not a huge fan myself). Kuru togas work great but all models have lead pipes, or am I mistaken? (OP says it must be pocket friendly)

Yes, all Kuru Togas have 3 mm lead pipes, so they aren't quite so pocket safe.

I have to be a dissenting voice about the Kuru Togas, I really didn't like mine because it felt squishy when writing with it (there's some kind of pressure spreading something or other in the lead holding mechanism I guess) and it really bugged me when writing, I really prefer my Draftmatic pencil (the knurling is a little rough for long use though) or my Pilot S10 (just a tiny bit too heavy).

I gave my 0.3mm Kuru Toga away because the rotating edge would cut into the paper and get stuck with alarming frequency.

The 0.5mm Kuru Toga does not seem to have this issue, so I kept it as a loaner or backup. I don't like writing with it because I feel the lead move as the mechanism moves up and down. If you're sensitive to lead wiggle like I am, then the Kuru Toga will probably not be to your liking.

One boring blue, one boring black 1mm thickness at most....

Then there are Fountain Pens with gorgeous permanent inks..

Have you considered a Staedtler's Triplus Micro 774 mechanical pencil? They come in 0.5 and 0.7 lead sizes and are have a fully retractable tip and are not drafting pencils. They are kind of light weight though. I sense you're looking for something a little more "high-end".

"I need more pens."
