0.5 or 0.7mm please! I have considered Caran d'Ache Ecridor, Montblanc series, (currently have Lamy 2000 0.7 mm), thought Pelikan M400 pencil was too frail for its price~ Durability, looks, feel, are all valued (Perhaps durability the most). I actually can't complain at all about my current Lamy 2000 0.7 mm, but just food for thought :3

 

I have heard and have owned the Kuru Toga series and Pentel Sharp Kerries. I do need this pencil to be pocket friendly, however. (Fixed writing tip is fine; just not fixed drafting tip). Thought about Kawekos before, but the fact I can only have 2 leads in the pencil max though... (can have 10+ in my Lamy 2000!)

I purchased a Pilot s20 mechanical pencil and find it to be delightful in every way: .5mm, red wood body, lovely balance and heft , just splendid to use and behold.

I have 3 mechanical pencils, a Rotring 600, MB Meisterstuck and MB 100 year historical. They all get used very regularly. Of the 3 you cannot beat the Meisterstuck. I have been using mine for well over 10 years and it has held up very well. It still looks great and works great. It is also a very well balanced instrument. The Rotring and the other MB are also very good but I have only used them for several months. The Meisterstuck has stood the test of time.

Have you thought of getting one that matches a fountain pen or ballpoint that you own? I personally have a set of Starwalkers which and I'd recommend the pencil to anyone.

I've had a Rotring 600 0.5mm for a few months and I can hardly use any other pencil. I love the weight and how solid it feels.

"Uni Kuru Toga High Grade Auto Lead Rotation Mechanical Pencil". Wonderful pencil, especially for hi mileage work like note taking or mathematics. Get the "High Grade" version. It should set you back $15 USD or less. The auto rotation mechanism is not a gimmick.

I second this statement. I wish the Kuru Toga came in an all metal body, but even so I find myself reaching for this pencil far more than my other, heavier, more expensive pencils.

The Uni Kuru Toga Roulette is mostly metal, if not entirely metal. I have one, and enjoy using it whenever I actually use a MP.

Yes. Mostly. But not entirely. The eraser cap in particular doesn't fit the rest of the design.

I like my TWSBI Precision, and it holds a lot of extra lead. I suggest the fixed pipe version. When I push in the retractable pipe on mine, it tends to break the lead. Sometimes I can do it without breakage, but I still wish I would've gone for the fixed version. Be warned, it's heavy! Oh--one more thing--it's got nearly a lifetime supply of eraser rubber built in, with extra in the box.

Vintage Parkers. I have plenty. Pencils in the Jotter family & love the P51 cap actuated pencils.

You could not go wrong with a Parker choice.

One of my favorites is an old Sheaffer 1.1mm pencil. Gorgeous and heavy and just absolutely awesome.

I also love my Rotring 800 more and more. Then the Pentel P series pencils, my Faber Castell TK-Fine Vario, and even my inexpensive Autopoint 1.1 American Jumbo (or whatever it's called).

The Pentel Sharp Kerry is an excellent place to start for a pocket safe mechanical pencil.

 

The Rotring Rapid Pro isn't quite as safe, but I haven't had any issues yet.

 

The Uni Shift is pocket safe, but it's a little longer than I like. If you have large hands, you might like it.

 

The Pentel Graphgear 1000 has a retractable tip, but I don't have one so I can't say how good a pencil it is.

 

If in doubt, start with the Kerry. It's not very expensive and it's an excellent pencil to use as a reference when looking at other pencils.

I have a 0.5mm Pentel Graphgear-1000 (which should not be confused with the Graphgear-500, a lesser pencil IMHO). My Graphgear-1000 has been a good performer. The sleeve doesn't wobble even though it does retract. The Graphgear-1000 comes in 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9mm widths. I bought mine some time ago for around $9 USD. The Graphgear-1000 comes in a metal clam-shell case with a tube of lead for a few bucks more.

 

If you must have a pocket-friendly mechanical pencil then the Graphgear-1000 is a great choice. But it is a conventional moving sleeve pencil and lacks the auto-rotate mechanism in the Kuro Toga.

      @bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.

      @bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

      What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen?       No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍

      @FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

      I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

      I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper.       Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill.
