Rotring - Brillant Royal Blue Review

Recommended Posts

I found this ink at a Rotring distributor, on the clearance shelf, for about 1 EUR / 30 ml bottle. They still had some NOS bottles, but AFAIK Rotring is not producing these anymore. For this price, it was impossible for me not to buy one.

I would describe the color a really nice dark blue, it reminds me to the dark blue sky, with grey storm clouds, that bring the smell of rain, and the thunders.

As someone who is used to lighter blue inks (maybe because of the old writings on letters and postcards, that are faded), I find the color very exciting, and since using it, it has become my favourite blue ink.

It is a nicely behaving ink, with beautiful, elegant shading, fast drying, and no smudging. No problems with leaving uncapped. Seems to be quite wet writing, and this does produce some bleedthrough at the end of strokes, and a bit of feathering, when used on cheap paper.

I think Rotring still produces blue cartridges for the ArtPen, however there may be a different ink inside.

As always, any comments are welcome!

I have a bottle of Rotring ultramarine I like. It is my only ultramarine ink.

Well, I only tried it once. With rare inks, I take my time with like 21 year old single malts.

It was nice you reminded me about the Rotering ink.

Not heard of this brand before. Do you know the reason they have stopped producing this ink? Thanks for the review.

When Rotring was bought by the Sanford division of Newell-Rubbermaid (the same company that owns Parker, Waterman and Sharpie among others), they stopped the manufacturing of Rotring fountain pens, and also the fp. inks. The one exception I can think of would be the Rotring ArtPen, and its cartridges.

I was very disappointed with this move, as Rotring has producted many high quality fountain pens, like the 600, Initial, Freeway, Esprit, Reneassaince, etc. I have several of these in my collection and they are quite good, and very reliable. Their inks were also nice, that's why I made the review, as Brillant bottles are getting rare nowadays...

Real shame that they have decided to stop manufacturing the fountain pens.
