Pilot Custom 92 Nib And Feed Collar?

I recently got my smoke C92 with a soft medium nib and decided to clean it thoroughly before use. I noticed what looks like a small threaded collar onto which the nib and feed fits. It looks similar to the collars in the vintage pelikans (seen it on a 400NN).

 

Can anyone else confirm? If it is indeed a collar, why not use it remove the nib and feed instead of having a friction fit?

On some Pilot pens, there is indeed a collar and it is reverse threaded into the grip section and usually glued into place. Some Sailor pens also use a collar that is threaded. In all of these pens, the way the collars are usually removed is from the back of the section. With the Sailor, the metal collar is unscrewed, and the nib assembly slides out the front of the grip section. With the Pilot, a special tool with two nubs is inserted into the back of the grip section and turned counter clockwise. In the Pilot, the collar then comes out the front of the grip section. Often, it is much easier to pull the nib than take out the collar.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't planning on trying to unscrew the collar. I usually pull the nib out anyway but only noticed this when I got a C92 demo. Made me think why pilot does not have screw out nib assemblies like pelikan as they almost seem to have it implemented.

Hi,

 

It's probably intended for service use only. Also with Pilot's policy (and the policy of the big three in general—Pilot, Sailor, and Platinum), the nib is part of the pen, and they don't provide it separately, at least in Japan. Interestingly enough, the tool that unscrews the collar also works on other Pilot pens like the Myu and pocket pens to unscrew the piece that holds the nib and feed in the pen.
