Is Keeping A Bunch Of Inked Pens Standing Up In A Mug Okay?

Recommended Posts

I've seen numerous posts about storing un-inked pens, and carrying cases for inked pens. I do not recall reading about how inked pens spend time when not in use.

I've deposited a bunch of inked pens in a large mug. I show no prejudice and let the pens across a wide price range comingle. This way they are all easily at hand. Is this the usual/popular approach? Is there a better way?

Upright will simply mean that ink will flow away from the nib and it will take you a moment to get started writing again. As long as they aren't slamming into one another and damaging the finish, or you're OK if they are, then game on.

It really depends on the type of mug used. Some form a perfect symmetry with the pens but others tend to get a bit cranky when filled with implements of writing.

That is indeed a concern at the back of my mind but I am not into the pens as a collector as much as a user. What are the alternatives?

It's really up to you and what you are comfortable with ding A long as the pens won't get damaged in the mug, store then how you like.

I roll and tape paper tubes and stick that in the cup.

Very similar concept to golf club tubes used in golf bags to keep the clubs separated.

You need to make the tube large enough so that the clip also goes into the tube, or the clip hangs up on the top of the tube.

I store inked pens in a metal canister that came in a gift pack set of hot chocolate (the mug in the set I use as a mug ).

As for getting them re-started when stored upright, I've actually read that inked pens *should* be stored upright so ink doesn't leak into the cap (the booklet that came with my Parker Urban set specifically says this).

I never had a problem, though the cheaper chinese ones do tend to dry up pretty quickly that way (ie may take a minute to get the feed flowing again).

Most my other pens which are almost always stored upright such as my Sheaffers (Craftsman, Touchdown, Snorkel), Montblanc 225, Monteverde Invincia Deluxe, Faber-Castell BASIC, etc all write immediately on the paper even if they been stored upright for more than a day.

Though now I have a pen case that is a little more secure... and it sits upright (nibs facing up) where I put it.

I was browsing through another thread on FPN last week (the thread where you show photos of your desk) and saw a photo with a transparent round/flat glass (acrylic?) pen holder with shallow holes where you can insert your pen so that they stand up vertically and do not touch neighboring pens. I tried doing a Google search for such a pen holder but came up with zip. Does anyone know where something like this can be found?

Use the search terms : Acrylic Pen Stand.

This one for example seems popular:

The term "holder" isn't often used except for things that are flat like business cards, rather you may wish to use terms like cases, stands, etc.

These can be found at sites like Pendemonium or antique stores. They are actually floral frogs. I have a slightly different variation that I use as a desk penholder.

Got a green, blue, brown and white cup...and need be can get another...depending on what inks I have. Yes, either a paper towel or bubble wrap in the cup..

Too many pens inked...now only 12, often it's 17.

Yep, some times a pen dries out on me ...so I have a postal stamp sponge & rubber container, to dip the nib in, if it's dry.

Certain pens do not play well in the sand box with others, a Lamy Persona black titanium oxide and a Cross Townsend should be kept separate, so they don't scratch your other pens.

I would have never have thought of this! I'm getting on this ASAP. Thanks for sharing :)

I have no idea where the term "frog" came from, but these are used in floral arranging. The glass ones are vintage and are usually paired with a vase or similar vessel. My Vasoline glass one above actually has a centre piece and sits in a shallow vase.

Must get one of these.

It's on my wishlist, despite having gone on a spending spree last month and february, I need to conserve my funds... got a little carried away there.

And it's even harder to sell some of the ones I don't use as much because they're in my hands now... hard to let go...
