OH, dang, that's depressing.

Can you show us pictures?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Ah ha! Government mandate!

Hi,

My understanding is that not only business / government records were at risk of being lost due to paper deterioration, (they were badly bitten by the short life expectancy of records on thermal fax paper), but publications as well - a very wide array of stuff on paper. In addition there were concerns about the negative environmental impact of the paper manufacturing process, (setting aside deforestation.)

Apparently the current production method addresses all those concerns, and is more economical, hence widely used by major producers. That said, I have no doubt that acid-laden paper continues to enter the market from grandfathered / loophole sources.

Oddly enough, I am more suspicious of the paper in a fancy binding than a ream of copy/print paper.

As for paper that contains recycled paper and unconventional [recycled] material, I would like to learn from those Members far more knowledgeable than yours truly.

As ISO certification is not readily achieved or sustained, most Co.s marketing ISO compliant products are only too glad to flaunt it, which is to the benefit of the consumer - look for the symbol. I reckon that an email query to a marketing Co. selling ISO compliant products would receive a prompt reply.

Please pardon me for wandering off-Topic.

Bye,

S1

I know this is an old topic, but it's one I bookmarked ages ago to come back and reply to.

I've had inks fade when exposed to constant light (e.g. on a wall) from a number of producers, but they have always still been readable.

Now for some scope, I have about 2 dozen inks from Parker, Visconti, J Herbin, Pilot (standard and Iroshizuku), Noodlers (Bulletproof), Private Reserve, Pelikan, and Diamine, but the only ones I've ever had fade inside a closed book were Parker Quink Blue and Quink Blue Black. The blue was almost unreadable after a couple of years, and the blue black was quite pale.

Ok, I have re-scanned the above images, (post 11) along with two others.

These are from some books I have that belonged to my maternal grandfather. He passed away on April 15, 1959. Today is the 59th anniversary of that event. I was born 13 months earlier. It is a Business Administration course he took through LaSalle Extension University. The publication date was 1923, his signature in the front flyleaf were all between 1923-1935. Two of the four are dated. The one in red is red pencil, the others a blue black ink. Given the time period probably iron gall, although I have no way of verifying that. The books came into my possession after my grandma passed away in October 1994. Keep in mind that for most of their 95 year life these books have been closed and sitting on a shelf. There are 18 volumes. Given the age of these, they are in remarkable shape.

From Volume 1: Personal Efficiency and Selling

Volume 2: Business Psychology

Volume 7: Industrial Organization and Management

Volume 12: Advertising.

R&K Salix fades even in a closed book. I have journal entries in 2014 that are faded down to the level of a light pencil sketch. Now, there are cases where I want that. For example, with my notes in the clinic, these are automatically copied and scanned. Having ink that last longer than a few hours is almost superfluous.
