Hmm, the US boutiques already increased price. I should have sent my pens in earlier.

Paul & Chrissy

You have both hit the nail on the head. There seems to be a degree of variability. As mentioned, there was no MB paperwork that came back with it, but there was a small brown envelope taped to the container (which has obviously been written out by the authorised dealers) with all my info on it as well as 'Level 2 Service'. That seems odd in itself, as I had always thought that piston work came under Level 1. But, it is the lack of paperwork from MB that does bug me a little.

I'm not really complaining, they did a wonderful job on the 146, and I am happy with it ..... and the pens always comeback in those lovely black MB pen holders, which I've actually seen for sale on Ebay for as much as £8 !

I have a MB Faulkner that leaks a little and I should send it to repair. Last year when I asked at my MB boutique they told me it should cost around 90 euros to get it fixed. Since I'm lazy, I didn't send it to repair just yet, but I will send it in the next couple of weeks. It seems that laziness cost around 25-30% more these days :)

You could carry on being lazy, and save 100% :)

My perspective: if there's major damage to the pen, I'd send it to MB for service. If less serious problems occur, I'd use an independent, recognized repair expert such as the many who have been mentioned on this forum and some of whom are contributors. They are dedicated and interested in your business and referrals. MB is interested in selling you a new pen. Repairs are a secondary matter.

Seems logical. I only have one comment here: this approach makes sense if you have an independent repair expert near by (or, at least, in the same country). As far as I know, in Romania we do not have such an option, unfortunately...

Just got a call from our local boutique and the service for my 146 was $64. I pick it up today

Picked it up just now. They said it was no charge. I showed a bit of surprise and he repeated no charge and showed me the invoice, which had NO CHARGE and a $64 invoice in the same box for comments from the Service Centre.

I smiled, and said thank you and walked away with a no charge service. Replaced the feeder case, ink feeder and piston. Referenced as Resin Service flat rate 1.

I sent a Starwalker Doue with bad cap threads in. Quoted fee: $200.75.

I would understand if the cap was missing, but it's just a faulty part. Totally absurd, especially given the prices that the whole pen goes for on ebay. Repair prices should be at cost + labor, not MSRP.

So,not only did you get an invoice (I never have yet), but the invoice was for $64 ,,,,,a third less than I've paid ..... and you were not charged ! I really must have been evil in a previous life! :D

If I were you, I would make a deal with I like mango cheesecake and send him all my fountain pens that need repairs. Afterwards he can take them to MB to get fixed  .

This does happen if you have a regular boutique where you do your Mb shopping ;)

I have to send two of my pens in for service. One is the 75th ann 146 with cracked nib coller (2nd time going back) and the other one is John Lennon with leak near the step down part. Anyone else has that problem with Lennon?

I will let you guys know how much it comes out to.

WE's and LE's are always more costly to service/repair

Faulkners are infamous for leaks. Mine did AND the back color band came unscrewed with the piston. Bad design.

1 or 2 weeks after getting a Faulkner, I remember I was reading QM2's review with this issue. And while reading it I said to myself "c'mon, this isn't the case with my Faulkner, it would be too much of a coincidence..." Yes, coincidence or not, 2 weeks after reading it (so a whole month of using my fountain pen) it started to leak.

After reading about several others with this problem, I had a small hope that MB would fix it on their own, but that's not the case  . I was quoted around 90 euros for fixing the leak, and this quotation was prior to the price increase for servicing.
