Parker Ballpen Refill Problem

I picked my Parker Duofold Pearl/Black Ball Point Pen to write some checks and found top twist mechanism was not working. I applied little force and made it work then I opened to see whats wrong and found that blue refill leaked inside and jammed it. I had to push it from front small little opening with toothpick to get it out and it was all messy. Luckily I didn't stain pearl finish outside of the pen with its ink.

Cleaned it with some ammonia but its really hard to clean inner side of the barrel.

So my question is what are the best other options of ball pen refills which will not leak inside my pen. I use that pen here and there and kept it in nice glass top pen box at room temp so don't see why this would happen.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

Would you let us know the type of refill inside? Was it a Golden Touch? I remember buying a NOS Sonnet and when it arrived the twist mechanism was almost locked due to leaking refill. It was a Golden Touch.

It is pictured here:

I have never seen any other standard Parker ballpoint refills leaking although it may occur rarely.

You could buy the genuine Parker refills again, or any other standard Parker type refills made by Schmidt, Schneider etc. I hope it does not happen again.

it was not the one in picture. the one leaked in my pen was metal finish regular Parker ball pen refill blue ink (quink ink one). I had couple accidents like this before as well in different parker ball pens like classic stainless steel and Frontier.

So need something better for these pens.

I've had Parker Gel type refills ooze a clear oily substance.

There's actually been a lot of discussion about 'Parker type' refills on FPN. My impression is that the Schmidt refills are considered higher in quality. I also have been the impression that in general the gel type refills will be more prone to leaking than the traditional bp ink refills.

Fisher refills come with a plastic end adapter which allow them to be used with the Parker mechanisms. Fisher ink is not like other bp inks -- essentially a thixotropic paste which helps avoid leakage; also the end of the refill (opposite the ball tip) is sealed which eliminates leakage from that end. I store Fishers even in the car -- no leaking in either a hot car nor a cold one in winter. But admittedly the writing experience is not as 'silky' as with a gel and is even a bit stiffer than other bp inks. If you're primarily using it for checks this might not be a problem.

In terms of writing checks, if you're concerned that 'someone' might attempt to alter the check, there has also been a lot of discussion about various bp and rb use inks which are very resistant to being solvent washed preparatory to altering the check. One pen that got good marks is the uni-ball Signo. I know there have been discussions about taking the refill out of even disposable pens and adapting it then for use in a Parker. You'd have to do a search to see what's involved.

Good luck with it all!

I had the same issues. Parker gel refills were always oily outside although I wiped them with alcohol frequently.

I am using Scheider Express 735 refills in my Omas Ogiva BP. They are precisely the same size as Parker refills. Also heard many good things about Schmidt refills.

I've only had one refill leak, that was a 'Quinkflow' type. The pen was in a normal house temperature, say 14 to 16 C, used in a normal way. Strange as 3 others bought at the same time are good refills, no problems, and I will continue to use them.

Otherwise no problems at all, I try different types and makes of refill as I can, and these 3 types all work well in my 'Classic Flighter' ballpoint.

The Fisher 'Space pen' refill adapter only just fits with about 10 thou clearance though.
