I'm a newbie to Nakaya, just got directly from the factory in Japan my Piccolo Writer Kuro Tamenuri with M nib a week ago and I really love the craftsmanship, size, weight, balance and smooth writing.

Welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell. Nice pen.

I should have posted here about 12 weeks ago when my Heki-Tamenuri Portable Writer arrived. It has a broad nib, though tbh it feels not that far off, certainly wider than a European medium. I checked the kanji on the nib and it is B not BB. Here's one of the pictures of it.

That is surely a beautiful pen. I have NEVER seen a urushi pen & perhaps never will; I had NOT seen or handled ANY of the pens I have purchased but merely seen photos & read reviews here. IF I were to be tempted by a Nakaya, THIS finish is the one that shows it best for my "temptation trigger." THAT subtle green peeking thru seems to be the PERFECT example of urushi & it's charm. Thank you for sharing your pen.

I have just received my first Nakaya not long ago. I ordered the same pen similar to the one ordered by @phthalo in this thread:

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/41915-nakaya-urushi-cigar-piccolo-custom

I have chose to have SEF in rose gold plating, with elastic modification:

I also bought a foldable ring and attached it with the pen as a stopper:

Even though it's SEF which I originally suspecting a bit scratchy on paper, it does write smoothly!

Nakaya Naka-Ai Kuro-tamenuri with my name in kanji.

The Mottishaw-stubbed broad nib is a great writer. Smooth with medium flow.

Good looking pen. Fun to write with. Next time, I might ask them to write my name upside down, because right-side up always looks upside down when I'm writing with it, or just holding it.

Newbie Q:

I hear Nakaya/Platinum nibs are very stiff. If I wanted a Nakaya nib that felt more like a "standard" gold nib (or even one at the springier end of the spectrum), should I consider their "soft" nibs? I'm not looking for Pilot Falcon-like semi-flex. (I prefer easy-to-control nibs.)

Thanks!

Check this link for great descriptions.

Also, I have several nibs John has modified to various italic tips and all have been fantastic. I have two of his custom Nakaya now, one a BB customized to a stub and one M cursive italic. Both are a joy to use.

I have a Nakaya in soft fine rhodium, it flexes slightly giving a slightly softer ride with nice control. The tines don't really part so there's not much line variation, I like it a lot.

I also have a Nakaya in soft medium gold, and it feels a little mushy with little feedback. I've never felt I could write consistently with it, so it's been sent to Michael Masayama to have ground into his rounded nose cursive italic and hopefully I'll have it back at the end of this month.

My first and only Nakaya is a Piccolo Long with rhodium plated EF nib. I am not particularly happy with it. The nib is great, but I just don't feel like using it. All the Nakaya pens that I have tried don't impress me much, and lack of customisation and frequent discontinuation of popular urushi finishes discourage me from getting another one.

what is the best and most reasonably priced place to buy Nakaya

There are less than 5 places to buy your Nakaya from. Nibs.com, Aestheticbay, La Couronne Du Comte, and Nakaya itself.

All sell at the same price.

Unless you have to have a new pen, buying used from sites like FPN is the cheapest option. Once in a while you can get a deal on eBay.

It all depends on how picky you are. :)

If you want less blah, blah, blah and more pictures, follow me on Instagram!
