My first Nakaya was also a long cigar in shu with n .8mm CI nib from Mr Mottishaw. I still use it almost every day.

Wouldn't it be great if Nakaya used TWSBI piston fillers instead of Platinum cartridge converters?

@DMS525

My first Nakaya was a "previously owned" Decapod in Heki-tamenuri. I had a 0.65 mm crisp cursive italic nib ground for it.

+1

My first Nakaya is the same as yours and with the same nib :)

It was a Long Cigar aka-tamenuri with a soft M nib ground to a M-F. I love it and use it almost daily.

My first Nakaya, which was also my first urushi pen of any sort, was a Piccolo I bought from a pen seller in France. I found it just a little short for my taste so I eventually sold it after about four years, but I liked it enough to write a review here (actually also my first review!). I'd definitely say that little pen lit the fire for what has since become my all consuming pen obsession. It made me realise that hand made, lacquered ebonite pens were something special.

My first, and to date only Nakaya is a Portable Cigar in the Kuro-Tamenuri finish. The nib is a wet fine, just perfect. Here are a couple of pics...

I debated a very long time before getting this pen. My only regret is that I debated a very long time. :)

My first Nakaya is my Blue Dragon portable cigar, with a BB nib ground to a stub by John Mottishaw.

Thats a pen I look at often on CFP's site... stunning pen!

I have a BB cut to a stub on my Neo Standard in Aka-tamenuri and it has set the standard for what a BB stub should be.

My first Nakaya was a solid black Piccolo Cigar that I ordered in haste before the price increase of April, 2008.

I'd ordered it with a super extra-fine nib expecting it to write like my Sailor 1911's H-EF. Hahaha. I didn't know then about the wetness scale when ordering these pens or to explain my high-angled pen grasp. Nibs.com swapped the nib out, no problem. But it still didn't feel right.

Long story short, nearly two years later (with the gorgeous pen dormant in the box), at the LA Pen Show, John Mottishaw swapped the nib for a firm M nib, and I finally experienced the "Shazam!" moment. Best $40 I'd spent.

I still have this pen - and seven more (eight if I count the latest one that's waiting for me in California).

Yeah, I like Nakayas.

Funny, the Nakaya was also the first pen I tried that I could have used a M nib with (I'm usually in EF territory). I opted for the F because then I could get a wet one and not lose the fineness of the line.

And I too prefer a firm nib. Flex just don't work for my style of writing.

My first Nakaya was a Naka-Ai with an architect's point purchased at the LA Pen Show. I am posting a picture below, but you can read my post on FPN about the story of my purchase at this link:

The purchase represented my first experience with a high quality Japanese pen. I enjoy it so much I was encouraged to

Hi,

My first Nakaya was a portable cigar model in a custom colour. It was a negoro-nuri pen with an extra-fine single tone nib. It had a special grip section. My nib is quite stiff, but I like stiff nibs best.

Is there more to this than just a wetness scale of 1 to 10 or something, and the idea behind "these pens" as opposed to others? Can anyone elaborate further? EF to M is a big jump just as far as wetness issues go. I'm curious.

My first Nakaya - Piccolo Aka Tamenuri - now gone to another home.

3854045291_c4250dd2fe_z.jpg

The Nakayas I still have are a long Piccolo in Shu and a Decapod Twist in kuro tamenuri as well as a Piccolo which writes so well I can't get rid of it even though I hardly ever use it.

Nakayas are very nice (I have a Neo Standard and plan to buy a Decapod Twist) but they are overhyped on FPN, IMO. Some of the LE stuff coming out of Namiki and Platinum is far more impressive, IMO.

I personally am not a huge fan of the recent Platinum LE's, but I would have to agree on the Namiki front. On the other hand the Namiki's are a lot more expensive than the basic urushi Nakaya's, and Nakaya is competitive in my opinion at the same price points. Once you get into fancier maki-e pens, all the Japanese manufacturers are at about the same price.

The relative affordability is the reason Nakaya is hyped, in my opinion at least. A Namiki Yukuri Royal is $1200 compared to a similar quality Nakaya Long for $550.
