Keeping Track Of Your Inks - My New System

This is only slightly OT, but these cards would also be perfect for colored pencil swatches. Especially if you're learning to layer them and producing a thousand new colors!

Since I'm new to inking (only have six samples so far) I will probably wait until the ink is in the pen and record them both...

Fabulous ideas here!

Great idea. Welcome aboard! :W2FPN:

I'm going to continue to use full sheets of paper. This is what binders are for.

But not very portable, which is the point of the cards.

My word cards go everywhere with me. I took them to a London pen meet up yesterday & they just tucked into my pocket. It was so easy to compare the inks I'd already got with ink samples on offer. A binder would have been a real drag to lug about.

Following the topic with interest, but I'm still wondering how to incorporate the system. I don't write with a swab and haven't found swabs to reflect the true nature of the ink in a pen. At least not for me. As such, I'm not confident that a color swab sample like that would help me. Second is the paper medium. If it really is similar to the type of paper I use then, maybe, just a writing sample with ink in pen would work. Is the paper any where similar to, well, any typical paper brand that folks write on for correspondence or in any type of notebook/loose leaf?

Here is my draft of what I'm putting on my cards.

I've read so many reviews that I know what is usually not on them that I want to know, particularly how the ink behaves on my favorite papers using a wet super flex nib, as well as a fine nib for use at work. And, as an artist, I want a big color swatch to illustrate any sheen it has, as well as shading in a very broad line combined with a thin line. Finally, I want to see how it behaves as a water color when it's still wet and after it's dried.

I'll use both sides of the cards, using scrapbooking adhesive to affix the six different papers to the back (textured) side, since it's not FP friendly - feathers like mad.

I plan on adding a photo of both sides of each card as a new review for that color of that brand of ink.

The cute little Pilot Birdiepet was a freebe from a recent eBay purchase and writes an amazing extra-fine line. Too bad it's so small, but it's ideal for this project.

I'll use this for cataloging my increasing collection of inks. A very good idea!

In a world where there are no eyes the sun would not be light, and in a world where there were no soft skins rocks would not be hard, nor in a world where there were no muscles would they be heavy. Existence is relationship and you're smack in the middle of it.

My cards haven't replaced my detailed ink notebook, where I test and record behaviour of each ink, using various different pens , nibs etc. I set up my card system as a very quick visual index/reference of all my inks, in one small package. I don't want to have to carry my ink notebook around with me and this is a neat, easily portable solution.

But at the end of the day it is just a set of small cards, with their inherent limitations. It works for me. It won't work for everyone.

Back on topic, the problem with notebooks, you can't sort them the same way.

Sorry, working all day without a break. Poo.

Amberleadavis, that photo makes me shudder.

Ring binders for a start, ooooo ! :( They never connect properly and always catch skin in their vicious bite.

Laminated anything, OOOOOO ! The slippyness and shinyness makes me cringe. Sorry.

The content however, REALLY useful. How on earth do you plan on replicating or duplicating that lot ? :o

 The quote I thought you'd reference was from further up the thread when you told me to order you. :P

The notebook is actually filled with sheet protectors and the originals are all from the fade tests. I can see them digitally at any time on my website.

Originally, I used these great print your own business card sheets.

Well, um in order to get those kinds of results, you have to abuse ...

...

...

....

......

.....

........

The inks (sheesh, Taz, what were you thinking?).

Those sheets were in the window for 4 months during the summer. You just can't get that kind of abuse in a regular office ya'know.

I agree, it is a great organizational tool. B)
