The Nakaya Naka-ai in Shu-nurippanshi (unpolished red) caught my eye on the nibs.com web site some months ago. I was really hooked when I saw Earthdawn's gorgeous photos. Others were activated by that topic too, because my good TFL friend who shall remain un-named snagged the last one in stock moments before I ordered mine. Fortunately, more were already on order, and mine arrived last week.

I had salved my wound from not receiving instant gratification by ordering a Piccolo in Shu, so I am able to provide a side-by-side comparison of Naka-ai/Piccolo size and of Shu/Shu-nurippanshi.

Both Pens have yellow gold BB nibs ground to 0.7 mm crisp cursive italic by John Mottishaw. Here is another photo of the Naka-ai's nib:

In these photos, one can certainly see a difference in the color of the two pens. The unpolished shu looks darker. Actually, the difference is less marked than I expected, and the shu-nurippanshi has a shinier, less matte finish than I expected. I can detect no tactile difference between the two pen's finishes.

I initially filled the new pen with Pelikan Brilliant Black. It had less crispness than I desired, and it was very toothy. I wrote with it for a couple days with a bit of improvement. This morning, I rinsed out the nib and converter very well and re-inked with Waterman Black. Interestingly, the line differentiation was much better, and the toothiness seems to be subsiding. I think I will continue to try different inks in this pen until I find a favorite. I'm thinking it may be Diamine Oxblood.

Oh yea.... very very beautiful!!!

Worth the wait eh' ?

How about a pic of them uncapped and lined up from the nib tips.

I met up with plistumi at the LI Pen Show and she was gracious enough to let me play with some of her AMAZING pens... among them were a couple of Piccolos and sadly I am now at the crossroad where I have to bear left and leave them behind... my Paws are just to big !! grrrrrrrrrrr

Big ol' congrats to you David.. have fun with your new baby!

Yeah. They are kind of good looking. :D The wait for the Naka-ai was definitely worth it.

I understand you to be requesting a photo with the two pens' nibs facing directly into the lens. I think I can do that.

As I believe I said in my Piccolo review, that shape fits so well into the breast pocket of my dress shirts that I may well get another or x of them. To my pleasant surprise, the Piccolo is quite comfortable in my very medium-sized hand.

As far as Plistumi goes, I think a burned out wooden match stick would be an "amazing"pen, if she were the one drawing with it.

Thanks for the congrats! Your review of your shu-nurippanshi Naka-ai is what pushed me over the edge. So, thanks!

Thanks! I feel I am in good company.

There are now nearly enough of us to request a "Nakaya Naka-ai Shu-Nurippanshi" Forum be set up.

Gorgeous pen, can we have a writing sample please? I'm interested in how that nib looks on paper.

Congratulations on a fantastic pen :)

Thank you for the photo ...

Uncapped & lined up next to each other you can see just how much shorter the Piccolo is to the Neo or Naka-ai.

For those with larger hands it can be a challenge to get use to or just not feasible as I found out.

I find the balance of the Desk pen to be great as well and wish they made that in the Unpolished Shu... though I guess it could be custom ordered? ... hmmm While not practical for everyday carry they are wonderful, which is why I ordered another one today lol.

Hmm although I have never held a Piccolo in person, the shape really appeals to me. It's a shame that nibs.com don't stock the long piccolo models any more.

In the hand, the Piccolo and the Naka-ai feel much the same. (This may not hold true for those with much bigger hands, I suppose.) Looking at my photo, I am struck by the Naka-ai looking like a Piccolo with an annexed tail. If I remember correctly, the "long piccolo" was a model exclusive to a shop in SE Asia, the name of which is on the tip of my tongue ..... Am I mis-remembering?

Thank you! That's quite the nib. Having chatted with Mr Mottishaw, I'm certain it's also only the very best he can do as well. Mottishaw's business ethic seems to be that if it's not his best, it's not worth shipping from the store.

Gorgeous pen, congrats again :)
