Thanks Kate I have seen tooling on saddles it is way past my abilities.

Final update for today

I have marked out the dimensions of the notebook on the inside of the leather

Looks complicated basically the inside line is the notebook open the middle one is the notebook closed and the outer line is where I plan to cut the stitches will go between the middle and outer lines.

Thanks

Michael

I am having some problems posting more than two pictures per post at the moment.

Here is the inside really the most important bit because it is where the pens go

Even though most of this piece will never be seen it still needs to be right

By the end of yesterday I had marked out the hide for cutting.

Today I cut the hide into two pieces one for the notebook cover and another piece for the pen case which was the sub divided into three pieces the back and front and the two inner covers.

I cut everything square using my cutting mat and sharp knife I took a long time checking and double checking.

Using a pair of dividers I marked out glue lines around the edges of the two inner pieces these matched the lines I marked out on the front back section yesterday.

Placing the notebook on the centre line I marked the position of the elastic closure band I then transferred these marks to the inner piece, once happy I punched two holes and joined the two holes with my knife.

beautiful! Someday Im gonna track one down that has tooling like my saddles

A year or so ago I saw someone on Etsy who did hand tooled leather covers. All I remember is that it appeared very well done.

  • 2 weeks later...

My next notebook project

Midori size but with a pen operated closure system, two pen loops on the back and one on the front.

First step is to cut a piece of leather and mark out the cuts if you are awake you may have noticed it is upside down.

Thread options These are the colours that I currently have it is possible to dye the thread but it is never 100% accurate.

Oh and if you had not already noticed the inside is pink. and will have slots for extra notebooks, papers or even cash and card slots

Thanks for looking

I have cut out the shape as marked in the previous picture then soaked in cold water ready for the dye I have punched the holes for sewing.

Purple dye has been chosen and applied I did some test pieces that came out a little dark so I have thinned out the dye.

Thanks

This looks great! Thank you. I am excited.

Thanks Elle_

I hope you like the next stage as much

The colour request was purple but not too dark this is always difficult for me as I am quite heavy with the dye,

The first picture shows the freshly applied dye on wet leather I applied some carnauba wax last thing yesterday to remove any excess dye and to even out the colour.

The second picture shows the actual colour as it has dried out this morning it looks very close to the sample I was shown.

The inside leather is next it is pink and I have acquired some pink linen thread which I have never used before so I have done a little research and I am now ready to go.

I am concerned that there may be some wet dye inside the stitch holes so I will pass a needle with some thread attached through each hole before sewing with the pink thread.

I also need to make the pen loops which I have not done before.

Thanks for looking
